Climbing Columbia is starting its performance

Nearly ninety years old and still a stand-out in the garden. Reliable repeat bloom; marvelous scent; gorgeous, large, very double flowers and virtually prickle-free, and it even lasts well as a cut flower. But, wouldn't you expect that from a rose bred by the E. G. Hill, Co. , one of America's early premier florist rose producers? Being a daughter of Ophelia, of course it has sported regularly, producing various colors as well as this climbing sport.

Thanks, Jin. This impressed me when I first encountered it on one of the large arches at The Huntington back in the early nineties. This is material from that specific plant. I rooted it when I was a volunteer there and spread it around as much as possible, even growing it as a free standing plant in my old Newhall garden. It went from there to Jimofshermanoaks' garden and came back to mine when he fell ill in his final days, so it has a special place to me. Add that it really is a desirable, good rose and that makes it even better. I loved seeing it at Rosemary's Roses up in Columbia, California where it took to the trees. I can't give it that, but it's spectacular anywhere.

Yeah, I know, I'm supposed to be REDUCING my wish list for roses, with the idea of trying to slow down a bit, but after seeing this, and remembering what Daisy says about this rose, I think I'm going to have to get it...
