My forecast shows 28 for two nights. After that mid thirties which I can live with. I don't grow tender plants in the ground but will bring in some potted plants. Thanks for the alert Stan. I had no idea.

Not as cold as some had said in Los Angeles,Lars. I know one site had it at 39f and even colder inland around San Diego. I hope a wind kicks up here in the eastbay. I have a Mango tree full of buds. Oh boy.

Holding off on planting the perennials I got! But I think we will stay in the mid 30s so everything else should be ok. I wish we would get some rain!

I'm protecting my meyer and pink variegated eureka both with lots of blooms and small fruit. Same with 3 tomato plants and a few over wintered peppers that will get some blankets and protection. And about 50 succulent containers will be moved as well.

Coastal L.A. 2 blocks from the ocean, low tonight 44, tomorrow night 45. This is the lowest temperatures I've seen all winter. Previous to this cold wave, the lowest temp had been 50. I hate the cold.

They are teasing me with some 35 -36f lows..and then Accuweather has the habit of always calling colder then any body else..32f.

Its windy and some clouds. I cant see a frost forming ..the breeze is said to continue all night.

I know the weather app this morning said 27* in the morning now it says 31*. I'm still going to protect a couple trees with blooms and some of my succulents.

This sucks. I hate winter.

One site raised my low to 41f!...its cloudy,its windy and with a chance of rain. No chance it drops to freezing. I expect a 35f. 41f sounds too good to be true.

I woke up to 34* which was 7* warmer than predicted yesterday.

Not sure what my low was...but not enough to make a frost. Banana's are green, and Brugs in yellow and pink are still in leaf and bloom. THOSE are the very first to be damaged by frost.

I think my 35f was about right.

So,wipe sweat off of brow..since its not going to be any colder the rest of the way...

We didn't reach 44 as predicted. The low was 46. Today it's sunny and the high is 56. Sucks. Seems like the cold is here for a while. Sucks.

Its cold for now..but they say it will heat up in early March.

All my oranges, lemons, and grapefruit were pushing fresh growth after the relatively warm weeks we've had. This morning's 28F in my Danville yard destroyed that flush at the tops of the citrus. The MexGrande Avo looks dead. I fear to see what the 24F did in Napa. We need warm rain systems from the south!

I hope it heats up nicely in early March. I really dislike these cold temps. I agree with molewacker, more warm rain from the south!

Surprised to hear the Avocado is dead. You must have just bought it in summer? Mexicola should be the last man standing in Avocadoland.

My advice is if it died? Get another..they should be hardy once they get going to low 20's. Hass and those types might be iffy in Danville.

I hope my crotons don't defoliate. They are in the ground so I can't move them, but I am keeping them dry while the cold spell lasts.

They might thin..but if you are dry and above frost levels..they can take soucal in ground. Mammy,Stoplight,Mrs Iceton..and the fiddle leafed croton are known to get shrubby here. Petra? The one you see everyplace for sale?..a tough grow in best climates here. Especially in ground.

As always,the more exotic looking in the family- the harder to grow in non tropical climates.

Stan, admittedly the MexGrande Avo is a recent purchase, small, and still in the pot. There is a bit of green stem above the graft.... hoping it comes back.

I simply watered and moved my Mex avocado close to the house (it’s in a huge pot on wheels) and it’s fine, but maybe it was more mature than your newer one Molewacker. It seems there’s quite a bit of year-round radiant heat in many areas of my yard from stonework also, so the frosts may not have as much impact here.

The most recent frosts this week seemed very light (near Danville, but closer to WC) and melted quickly. Citrus, pomegranates, etc., all still have their new growth. Nothing really looked affected at all here. I made sure to water everything well the day before so that probably made a difference too since frost affects dry areas more.

stanofh I have a few Petras and a few oakleaf. So far so good. I am definitely getting some Mammy this year, I just have to find it first lol.

Mammy is the wavy leafed one. Home Depot always has them. All the others are hit and miss. I know of two people near San Diego that have waist high Mammy's..look great.

Mammy I had in the bay area for 2 summers and one winter outdoors. ALL my plants have to survive outdoors, and then last years endless rains up here..with a cold late December did her in. I had potted it up to a 5 gallon that summer it was doing so well.

Petra thrived all summer...died back a lot the next winter..and after a weak comeback died early in its second winter. BUT! As you know Charlie- 'Petra' is like the coconut palm of Crotons..what everybody thinks of as what a Croton should look like.

Actually,killed me to pass on a Petra that HD had last summer that was spectacularly yellow veined. Awesome. I know the other half would have seen it and asked why buy something that dies....so,Petra is for some other day!

Looks like the worst has passed in cold..still a couple of upper 30's lows in the forecast for this never ending pool of cold air. Otherwise lows in the 40's. Seasonal.

Today was 65 and sunny in coastal L.A. It felt warm compared to last week, which sucked. This week we have a few cool days, and then a warm up starting on Sunday. I'm ready for it.

It was 26F in my Napa yard yesterday morning. I hope we are done with the sub freezing for the season. All the citrus' flush higher than 3-4 ft. is toasted. That's one way to keep them from getting too tall!

60F today. Until yesterday,I thought my banana leafs were going be green the full year. Not now.

So much hail fell so fast the ground was white as if it had snowed. I hate hail but it is as good as rain for the soil so I am happy. Stan did you get the rain or the hail?

First it rained in the night Emmarene...the day was clear until mid afternoon- then we got a sprinkle of the "frozen precipitation". Its been windy again. My Ti plant has been knocked over three times this February..never fell over the first three years in that pot. A pot up in size is needed.

Should add that SNOW has hit the bay area hills. Covered Mt. Diablo and Mt. Hamilton. Also,the North Pole is having far above average temps- its where the cold jet steam hits that high pressure and dives south right over us. They say Friday- MARCH!..it might not make it to 50f here in the bay area with super cold rains.

That's not the 81f we had on February the third.

It was really just a light dusting on Mt Diablo. Not uncommon this time of year. No frost at all down here at the base.

I just heard that TWO large storms are headed our way. Storm one is going to dump 2" of rain Fri-Mon,and the second is coming next mid week possibly.

This blows. I am so done with this cold crap. I know, I know, we're spoiled in CA. Down here in SoCal this is literally the second week of "cold weather" we've had all winter, but still, I hate it. We've been basking in glorious sunshine and warmth and then end of Feb comes and it's all 50s for highs and 40s for lows. I like warm rain, not cold fronts. Next week seems better, highs in the mid to high 60s, plus a stronger March sun. Looking fwd to that.

Hi Stan. It’s pretty normal each year. Hot hot hot dry summers and frosty winters. Really hasn’t been that cold this winter here, but it has been pretty frosty in Napa.

Interesting Cori Ann. Napa has been under siege from cold mornings. After all that at first warm weather,then followed by way under average cold..Hayward's February came out near average. 2f warmer days,but 2f colder nights. I knew I was taking the chance of looking at big frosted leafs if I planted them-Banana's. I might replace with an Avocado.

MARCH 3rd and its raw out there. COLD,wet,slippery. By the end of April,it will be forgotten.

62 and sunny in coastal L.A today, yesterday we had clouds and rain and a high of 60. Starting Monday the weather warms up to highs in the low 70s and lows in the mid 50s. By mid week they are calling for sub-tropical moisture to come into our area. The March sun feels much warmer and is now at 49.6 degrees in the sky, 16 degrees higher than on December 21st.
