Gas ventless fireplace frame ideas

Our fireplace is not built in but has this huge frame over it. It sits in a low ceiling basement (about 8ft) and I’m trying to decide if I could get away with building a slimmer frame that goes all the way to the ceiling. Plan would be to have stone instead of wood.See pic attached:

Before you go too far with addressing looks, give serious thought to having the gas fireplace vented to the outside. In general,
venting such a device inside is not a good idea. Here is a good read on

I think it would look nice to just sand it and paint it white.

I would love to make this a vented fireplace but I’m afraid it would be really expensive.

I installed an electric fireplace in our basement because ventless gas just doesn’t seem safe to me no matter what the specs promise. Ours has a heater which we use for supplemental heat.
