I'm usually in favor of painting out wood if you can't live with it. However, in this case, I'd try and give it a go. Remove the overly decorative trim pieces; to me, they don't seem to belong. The room appears to be full of light. Live with it for a while.

Just so you have some disagreement going here, I'd say a reluctant yes to painting the ceiling if you must, but leave those Deco trims alone. They're delicious. Wonderful room, fabulous problem to have.

Agree on all accounts. The rest of the house has similar head scratchers. Good problem to have so I don't want to go in the wrong direction. The room isn't big to begin with so I was trying to find a way to open it up. Decor style is very loose but looking for a general light/clean look.

A lot of the lightness you want in this room will come from your choice of bed and bedding -- the previous owner's bed is very heavy looking.

I, too, am glad that the furniture is not yours. If this were my room, I might begin my decorating by looking for a fabric or a large area rug to complement the beautiful wood.
Please post "before and after" photos when you have completed the room.

I would leave it as is for a while, probably right through all seasons. I like the white walls too. Curious about this house. Does the style continue throughout?

I think it’s more of an off white wall colour but I can’t remember. Maybe I’ll paint the walls white, get my light bedding in with a light carpet. Start with that and play with highlights for some throw pillows and side tables.

1. Don’t paint the wood
2. Pain the walls a nice neutral soft green. Either paint or wallpaper the wall behind the bed a contrasting color or design
3. Replace the bed/headboard. Go with a sleigh bed or canopy look
4. Change the light to recessed if possible
5. Move the dress to where the mirror is
6. Lose the mirror
7. Add curtains floor to ceiling
8. Get bedding that will make the room look luxurious and inviting
9. Put a large piece of artwork between the windows
10. Replace the closet doors to mimic the entry door
11. Get a large area rug
12. Put a chaise against the wall under the artwork

All those "knots" in the wood will be a problem if you paint. The design is purposeful and pretty for "massive/rustic." You may want to consider beefing up your own headboard so it can stand up to the trim. I would add a seating area in that nook at the end using a chaise or a loveseat or settee. Hang a wow piece of art above it. Replacing the ceiling fixture with just the right rustic/glam chandelier will make a huge difference. This one comes in larger sizes too.
