I would first measure out your space and choose a rug that is as large as possible to fill that space, choosing the colors you most love and want to see in your space. If you tend toward the neutral, try to find a rug that has at least hints of other colors that you'd like to see for pillows, paintings and other accessories. Your space doesn't seem huge, so don't choose oversize furniture that will limit placement. I gather the TV is going to the right of the fireplace. Choose a long console for under the TV in a chic but timeless style which should be quite a bit longer than the TV. You'll need a couch and several chairs, and choose a coffee table that doesn't take up much space visually so that you can see as much of the rug as possible and will make the room appear larger. You'll need one or two tables for lamps. They do not have to be the same as long as the height is similar. A beautiful and colorful painting over the mantel will make a dramatic focal point. Drapes for the window in white would give a softening effect.

awesome suggestions! we will not have a tv in the space at all as there is a tv in the front living room just outside this door.

In that case you could have a long and low bookcase there, which will give a welcoming vibe to your room. Over that you might consider a gallery wall of paintings to fill the space, perhaps drawings and watercolors so as to make it different from the painting over the mantel, should you choose to do that. Please, no large clocks, words or other trends that are no longer current. This could be a very classy and beautiful space. Please don't forget lamps, which are so much better than any ceiling light you might have, although the lights over the mantel are cool. This would be your chance to put in a contrasting color, say yellow or turquoise, in ceramic lamp bases, which could be repeated in pillows and throws.

spatrickson, how do you intend to use the space? Is it to be a breakfast area, or just a space to hang out and talk with the cook? Or maybe a space for the cook to collapse after s/he's finished the prep? A first aid station in case someone gets out of control with the knives?

we really don't sit here very much just need it to look nice. we had a sofa against the wall and two arm chairs facing it but it seemed like too much furniture. here's a couple more angles. I don't really want the furniture facing the wall id like it more open to the kitchen so the guests may chat with cook or kids just hang out there.

Breakfast/game/homework/hopeful dog table. I'd skip the rug in here. It just makes it harder for Daisy to clean the floor.

I love that except we have this dining nook at the end of the island where that round table goes

Aha. So it really is a sitting area. A sofa and two chairs would be too much, but perhaps just two lounge-y chairs and a coffee table, a place for coffee or wine or warm up by the fire...

Another reason to skip the rug is that odd angle formed by the fireplace.

I’m doing a corner fireplace on my back porch. I lucked out in that I have 4 matched wicker armchairs so I’m using those. My outdoor dining table is kind of where your kitchen is.

This is what mine will look like,

Here is a nice image from Pinterest that may make better sense than my drawing.

I found this great great coffee table that is adjustable. It has a crank so you can take it from coffee table height to dining height. We love to do jigsaw puzzles and play cards so I can use this area for that, and also overflow dining if we have a big group!
