Builder Question

last modified: 8 years ago

Do builders prefer if you have permits in hand to start dialogue and meetings for a custom home build?

Our home design process started 3 years ago. We designed one home and had a builder lined up to work with, but some personal issues came up and we needed to put our project on hold. In the meantime, we ended up purchasing another lot adjacent to ours and with that purchase, we ended designing another house. The builder that we were going to work with, has gotten busier and is unable to take on our project.

We are now to a point where our house and site plans are at the engineers. I would like to start meeting with new builders. Should I wait until we have permits in hand or the plans are at the building dept? Is wanting to meet with them at the property, having plans for them premature? I realize that everyone is extremely busy and wouldn't want to waste anyone's time as well as not waste my time trying to set up meetings if builders prefer to have permits completed.

TIA
