Desperately Need Rug Advice for Living Room

I am upgrading my living room furniture and decor. I have a new couch, chair, coffee table, and entertainment center. I will also be adding shelves and sconces to the wall behind the couch.

I believe I need a larger rug and one that can help complete the look.

I was thinking a lighter colored rug would be nice to offset the wood and color of the couch, but I am open to suggestions. Two options I have found that I like are:

https://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Safavieh-Florida-Shag-Scrollwork-Elegance-Cream-Blue-Area-Rug-8-x-10/11739219/product.html

https://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Safavieh-Casual-Natural-Fiber-Herringbone-Natural-and-Blue-Border-Seagrass-Rug-8-x-10/4256813/product.html

Appreciate any advice you can offer on these options or others.

Thanks much!

The one you like from Overstock is natural fiber so it's rough on the feet and if someone spills anything on the fiber it's ruined. It cannot be cleaned. I have had rugs like this twice and thought I could keep it clean, but accidents happen and they both ended up in the garbage. I see you have a dog and one accident at either end of the dog will doom the natural fiber.

You can select an indoor outdoor rug with a flat weave that can duplicate the natural fiber rug you like. You can clean this and even hose it off if necessary.

The room right now are quite neutral and you may want to consider adding some colour. Pick a colour you like from the painting behind the couch and look for a larger rug with the same colour in it. Introduce the same colour in an additional pillow or two.

kjoy's Karastan rug is lovely and has the color and pattern your room is crying out for.

Love the area rug kjoy posted for your room. It elevates your room's style by 100%. As beckysharp mentions, it brings in the color and pattern your room needs.

    Hi jemulro-

A rug with color and pattern would look best as others have suggested, but carefully measure the size and make sure it is correct for the area.

In addition, the artwork over your sectional, although lovely is too small for the size of your sectional.

You need something that is approximately 3/4 the width of the width of the portion of your sectional that is against the wall with a height commensurate with the width.

BeverlyFLADeziner enlarged it to the appropriate size a work of art should be for that wall, clever gal that she is!

I would also get colorful throw pillows for the sectional and chair that coordinate it all together.

Rather than the plain rectangular mirror to the left of the door, I would get an interesting mirror, round or starburst, there are many different types of all different materials. Here are just a few, although there are so many you can find on the internet of varying sizes.

I would also put a live plant on that table under the mirror, and find a place to put a large green floor plant somewhere in the living room.

I have the feeling that you don't want colors in your room and would be best off with a large rug that has a self-pattern but only one color. You have too much bare floor so please be sure to tape off or measure how large a rug you can put there. I wouldn't buy any rug that is very cheap because it will downgrade the look of your very nice room, or a room that is banded with a different color such as you've given links to.

Whatever the rug, it should be at least 2 feet wider than the new sofa.

Thank you all so much for the feedback. I hadn't previously thought of going with a rug as suggested, but the idea is growing on me. The price is a little steep, but perhaps it's worth it and necessary. Here is another option I found that is more affordable and a little lighter, which is what I was originally going for:

Let me know if you think this one would work well or if I need to pony up for the other one

Eek. That's what I get for assuming : ) . The Karastan is some kind of polyester, sigh. Though in the rug world, polyester is preferable to polypropylene. But still not as good as well.

What a lovely room! If you are going for a more muted less colorful rug I would go with something larger than you have and with a beige color in it for a little contrast.

The Karastan would be the star of your room and bring in needed color and pattern.

Your room is coming along nicely. I do think you need some color and pattern for movement and interest. One thing you can do, if a large wool is too expensive is to layer it on top of a Seagrass rug. I did this in my living room and love the options it gives me to change out rugs while leaving the Seagrass rug as a backdrop. Like this,

You can angle a smaller rug, too.

I love this rug from esalerugs

If I recall correctly from others in the forum, esalerugs has free shipping and free returns (as well as good prices for wool rugs) so you can try out a rug in your room to see what you think.

Thank you all again. I found 2 similar rugs on esalerugs that are considerably less. They are made of Polypropylene, so not sure if that is an issue. Here are the rugs and any thoughts would be appreciated.

Polypropylene is actually very good, and I have two of them from esalerugs that are holding up very well. They can be hosed off if they get dirty. I think a somewhat "faded" or modern rug would look better than the ones you've selected. Even with the polypropylene rugs I would select the more expensive ones; the design will look much nicer. I returned one for that reason.

Here is the Rug Chick blog on polypropylene/olefin rugs; I've found her blog helpful for learning more about the different materials available and what to expect,
