I would definitely do something more simple, if not change out the floor entirely.

the tile is granite,,,possibly 'Yellow Star', from here at Floor and Decor. (know that some granites have as many as 4 different names, depending on what stoneyard or store chooses to name them)

Yours could also be Almond Mauve since it has those pink tones to it. Take a broken piece in w/you to any stone place that carries granite 12x12 tiles.

Your cabinets are an off white, you have a quartz marble-look, so doing anything in a white subway will look off against both of those.

As for your backsplash, I think a dark gray glass tile would give you some nice contrast. That one you have for a sample up behind the stove is a NO. does not work at all.

The PINK floor has to go. And you need a real hood. And under cabinet lighting. No dark gloomy prison gray backsplash ever. And why is the sink island 6’ away from the cooking zone?

If you had light bleached wood floors that gray movement stone could be lovely. However, If you are keeping those floors think about something with less movement and a more uncluttered simple design.

Is there a way to incorporate an organic wood? I’ve never seen a wood backsplash, but I’d advocate for anything other than another stone...

Do make sure any backsplash above a stove top is intended for that purpose. A single smooth surface will be easier to clean.

Show your photo at your local stone yards for the floor tile, just be aware that the shading may vary. You can always use a plain black stone to replace the damaged tiles. The large tile shown over your cooktop would look great as a backsplash.

Thanks all, I like and agree with your comments. I did go to Floor and Decor for the floor tiles and the one’s in the store didn’t match - I’ll check other places now that I know what they’re called. My first choice for backsplash is the Rocky Arabesque.

What about one pane of painted back charcoal colored glass?

I think the issue is there is no backsplash at all.

Right the walls are just white and everything is sterile, I’m not color adverse just not sure how to complete the project. So that it blends with the exterior of the house

It looks like you need a vent hood over the range. Once you figure out a
vent hood and the flooring then you can focus on the backsplash.

If you absolutely cannot stand your current backsplash then paint it a color you love that goes with the home and wait to install a backsplash until the floor is replaced/upgraded & the hood is installed.

Absolutely nothing will make the impact that getting rid of that PINK floor will do. It clashes with the yellow cabinets. That should be the #1 budget priority. Don’t spend any money on anything else until that is done.

If you can't afford to get new flooring, then you won't be able to afford cement tile for the splash. (and it would be too busy w/what you have on the floor anyway)

What if you demo'ed it yourself and put down something else? could you swing that?

I mentioned the Nabi Arabesque because they are new tiles and because they have the white marble, to break up the dark gray a bit. And these also have a little texture to them.

I agree with @sophiewheeler, replacing the floor should come first. Hold off on the doing the back splash until you can replace the floor.

Plain glass subway tile in a smooth shiny finish in a pale gray, taupe, or white would compliment your stone flooring. I think glass subway looks so good with natural stone. The glass has depth and really pairs up well with flooring such as that. Your flooring is somewhat busy although it is a subtle small pattern, and you also have the grid pattern of the grout from between the squares of tiles adding busyness. So for that reason I would use something very simple which doesn't compete with your floor tile. Your white countertops and cabinets will make it a lot easier to find a backsplash tile to go with that neutral palette, the flooring is your only wild card.

A tile like this compliments stone beautifully, but maybe could go a little lighter, or go in taupe, gray or white, something that goes with the floor tile and also works with your countertops and cabinets. When I shopped for my own tile, I bought several different single tiles, brought them home, chose which one worked best & returned the rest, then order a lot more of the color I chose.

Shand, have you though about doing a linoleum? Old school linoleum or marmoleum flooring.

these are click tiles. you may be able to lay them right over what you have if your floor is nice and smooth.

at the very least you could go over it w/vinyl click flooring until you've saved enough to rip out the entire thing.

I like the idea of going over the existing floor with a cost effective vinyl floor. If a new floor isn't in the budget then I think that backsplash is going to have to coordinate with the floor.

Ok I picked up some tile samples based on the consensus that a gray subway tile is my best option, my vote is the dark gray but I’m not the professional so I’d like your opinions, I’ll keep the floor for at least another year and then continue the hardwoods.

forget about matching the floor,,,it will be seen against your cabinets and countertop. put them up there and take a pic

You mean Calacatta Gold? the real marble? what is the countertop that is on there now? is that not staying? Put your tiles against the wall where they would be as a backsplash. It's too hard to look at your photos and choose. just line them up against the wall, stand back so you get a portion of the cabinets and the countertop in the picture.

Beth H. I know I wasn't the inteded 'helpee' in this thread, but I may also borrow some of your good flooring ideas when we finally do our den floor downstairs. We don't want to spend a lot down there where the hot water heater & washing machine are and there is always the possibility of flooding, although it has never happened --knock on wood {knocking on my head}, would love to do an affordable d.i.y. down there and save some $$$. I like your 'vinyl click flooring' or 'Marmoleum' ideas. At this time we still have faux linoleum brick look individual squares from 1979 when the house was built, they are very dark and not a good look, it looks even worse in person than in the photo.......

I definitely want tiles for the durability and texture, the samples are in from Tile Bar and I’m torn between these two, I forgot to mention the tile will also be used around the fire place in the adjacent family room . I really like the Trenza Weave but the Nabi Arabesque is more fun. My question is which one goes best with the exterior of the house?

i like the Nabi for the kitchen, and the basketweave for around the fireplace.

as for the basketweave,,you can get that at BuildersDepot. they use the actual carrara marble as opposed to other places that have look a like marble from China. (if you can buy it locally from your own tile place, then disregard !)

what are you doing on the hearth? you could do a solid black granite or a solid piece of carrara or even a black slate.
