PLEASE HELP, can’t visualize how to make this room pop!

I painted our family room from rust red to a neutral color. The room looks so much bigger but we need colorful art work to break up feeling like we’re in a tan box. I’ve found stuff (see below) I like but i cant visualize it. I also don’t know if we can pull it off in our house. My kitchen which is the next room over has a lot of teals and oranges. Id like a large horizontal abstract canvas picture above couch on the the slanted wall. Something that will make the room pop. I’m thinking about putting the metal piece on the stairwell which is in the same room. I’m afraid pick two pieces that won’t go together in one room. Please help !

I like the photo with the teal propeller. Now, before we go any further, let's get some sizes down. Everything I've done so far is a guesstimate. I need a real measurement, like the length of the three-seater section of the couch. Then I can better estimate the size of the art.

I also think you need a rug that is truly mid-toned like the one in the Photoshopped image above.

I will get measurements tonight. The rug I purchased needs to go back to the store. Plus a 8x10 is too small for the area. Have to find a larger one. Grover, when this is all done, I need to send you a gift.

Well, I really like those peanut butter doggy biscuits a lot. ;-)

Add large or many complenetary pieces in the same color palette to fill up that wall. Think high. Also, add more browns, tans, sandy colors, and add softer or darker hues of coral and teal - peaches and bold dark blues can complement the neigboring room and don't have to match perfectly. Keep the room airy and soft by focusing on the tans and browns

    Wall is 16 ft wide

couch against that wall is a little over 7feet wide

If the couch is just over 7', then all the art I've Photoshopped is probably pretty close in size. The teal propeller canvas is just under 7', so it looks about right.

Grover, the large size is a 4P. I just remembered your comment from the other day. Should I skip it ? The one piece only comes in a 54x36

Yes. Please do not cut up that canvas. Go back to art.com's loft art and see if they have that one. You can refine by subject and they had lots of airplanes, so it's possible they have it or one very similar.

I don't see any of the art solving the problem of everything looking low and huddled together with massive empty wall space around it. Above all, I wouldn't cluster a bunch of little pictures together above the couch, it would just worsen the huddled together effect.

A very long wall hanging or other long, vertical art (could be a bit dimensional or textural) would tie the empty space together from top to bottom. Or a large hanging light fixture or modernist ceiling fan. Reminds me of a ceiling fan I saw at Lowe's the other day: Fanimation Studio Collection Covert 64" Indoor/Outdoor Ceiling Fan.

However, you'd need a really long downrod to bring a ceiling fan to a level that would tie in with the seating area. Same would apply if you went with a light fixture. But I do think one or the other could tie the space together nicely.

    Best of luck!

I would consider breaking up the large span of tan wall with paint. For example, paint the lower portion a much lighter colour and the top portio a darker colour. I think this would help to eliminate the feeling of living in a tall box. I think it would also make artwork feel more balanced.

Along the line of what Nicole said - here's one house's tall wall - idk if this be balanced with your other walls, and your look

With a slanted ceiling, to me a large canvas is very worth a try. Might be different if entire wall was high [like here]

"Brainstorming" - saw number of pics - what if you had a step up? with 2 at right, then 3, then 4 at the higher part of wall?

Decisions decisions decisions. So far, I like the vintage teal airplane the best. I think I need to take a break on the wall.

Maybe I should focus on a rug and curtains right now then work on wall art from there...? This is way harder then I wanted it to be.

Definitely not the black and white rug. Let me Photoshop the other three in your space. Back in a bit.

I may take back what I said about the black and white one. I thought it would be too severe, but it adds a lot of drama if you want to go that way. I like all the other rugs, with the last one being my least favorite. See what you think.

It’s actually a dark navy blue it looks super dark in the photo but not that dark in person actually looks pretty sweet ! Here we go...the look might be changing again. Omg! Haha

Out of al the carpets, I think I like the dark one the most

Navy and dark brown may not be a great combination. It's two bold colors fighting for dominance.

However, let's consider something else before you get set on a carpet. These are Getty exhibition banners. They are huge: each piece 3' x 8', two pieces per set. They are $50 or $75 for the set. They are used, so they will show some wear and tear which may or may not add to their charm.

    See them here: https://shop.getty.edu/collections/exhibition-banners#

Take this FWIW; it's just my opinion, but I love this rug and like this look a lot. I changed the orange pillows to rust to match the banner.

Ooo. DEF tall vertical over horizontal wide. ...I still like my carpet over the others. I do Like the dark carpet.

Especially, after seeing the one we thought wouldn’t look good. I’m feeling better about this.

I feel like the darker carpet makes the room look bold and gives the coffee table a chance With the lighter carpet I feel like the coffee table is blending into it

Get some cream colored pillows. Keep the teal

i will get rid of that brown foot rest at the end of the one sectional

    How about this then:

The look of this carpet is a possibility now. I was up late trying to find tall vertical artwork. I couldn’t find any

Should I take the couch by the window, replace it with the other end of the sectional? it will extend that side 3ft (see the green line)

then take the single seat (red underline) and put that where the rocking chair is? This will leave the couch hugging the wall.

OR I put the corner piece of the sectional in the lower part of the ceiling. Have it connect with the window couch.

Scoot the single loveseat over and put the rocking chair next to it. Then get something to put in that corner where the two large walls meet like A tall artificial plant (not referring to a nasty generic corner plant).

    Or

    LEAVE IT how it is.

I'm not sure how all these pieces get configured, but let's see if we can get that settled before we do anything else. I would not rearrange so it extends further into the opening into the dining area. However, in this photo here...

...that recliner in the corner unbalances everything. Can it be removed? Leave the 2-seater in front of the window, then move the sectional as it's currently configured toward the window so it's more centered on the back wall?
I would also turn the coffee table 90° so it aligns with the long leg of the couch.

Ok....I had to move things around just to see ... staring at the tall corner had me thinking.

Put the smaller sectional piece by the window so I could put the rocker off to the side to try and separate it. Put the lamp in the tall corner to try and visualize if something should be in that corner. Took curtains down to try to visualize different ones.

In this arrangement, the loveseat encroaches on the dining entry, the rocker can't see the TV, and the lamp is dwarfed in that corner. What about leaving the seating as it was except scooting the loveseat to the right a bit under the window so the rocker can come up to join the sofa and loveseat like so:

    This would be more functional.

Love the neutral rugs the best. vertical art looks best..abstract painting.

I am having the hardest time finding tall vertical artwork. Everything I’ve seen is too short

Masurel, you've rejected the Getty museum banners? You will not find anything larger than that unless you commission it.

Ya. The size and lay out is good but not the image. Fine art America has large pieces for a large price. I’m thinking of getting insulation foam and wrapping it with a neat textured wall paper or a neat shower curtain. If it looks horrible, I don’t have much to lose.

A cool peacock pic I think would be cool with teals

Did you look at any of the other images at Getty to see if there might be one you liked?https://shop.getty.edu/collections/exhibition-banners#

    Yes

The Jackson Pollock banner has a lot of the same colors as the peacock pic you posted... (the side of the banner with just the art)

Another option...make your own! Do you have a 4cats art studio near you? They will do splatter or pouring parties. My boys have done the splatter...i think they are 3 x5' but you'll need to confirm. https://4cats.com/collections/workshops/All-Workshops

I have a 2-story living room in which I hung 2 "kuba cloth" antique African textiles, over 18 feet long each. Kuba cloth can address a vertical art issue in dramatic fashion! Photos of examples, but also google "kuba cloth"........each one is handmade with a variety of differences.

Going shopping today with hubby. Going into this, I thought it would be easy peasy. Not so much. :)

Grover, what do you think ?

It's a nice piece of art, but unless it's 7 or 8 feet tall, I don't see any way to use it in your room.

I think nothing short of a beautiful floor to ceiling wallpapered wall will do. Then choose a color in the paper and paint the walls next to it a shade or two darker. I know, you've already painted it but either you do something big and bold like my suggestion or have all these prints and stained glass items scattered on it and it will look tacky. Just bite the bullet and do it. It will look sensational and be the focal point of your home and receiver of many compliments and wall envy. And don't be afraid to use rich deep shades in the colors you're using in the rest of your home.

I agree you should ADD SOME ART.

A couple of statement sconces for ambiance and it would take this room to the next level of design and feel..

    Grover, hi.

moved the rocking chair in corner. It won’t fit like you had it pictured. It’s too wide. I bought these pillows and curtains today. The curtains I wanted to visualize if the color would look good.
