Semi Custom Entertainment Center?

So we are having a custom entertainment center made. There has been a lot of demo and prep work and they have not begun building the unIt. The contractor is awful and changing pricing and completely unprofessional. It's been very stressful.

I am considering cutting ties with him (we've paid him probably too much as this point) and putting a semi custom entertainment in. . I found one I like and I believe wed just have to find someone to fill in the area on top, so it looks like a built in.

Have any of you done this? Would love to know what your experience was like.

Can post pics but FYI your contractor is usually not a cabinet maker which is what you need and before doing that think about what you are going to put on the book shelves in my experience these seem like a good ide and almost always end up being a hot mess of a bunch of little crap that has no real reason to be displayed

Hello Optasia,

If you are already getting red flags with this contractor cut ties now and walk away, it will only get worse. Have him show you an itemized invoice for work done to date so you can reconcile your payments.

I've done many semi-custom units and I have my carpenter do the install and any refinements to make it look custom and built-in.

No. We have a very large notch to fill where there used to be a firecplace etc. We'd like bookcases and lighting etc

I love bookcases flanking TV built-ins. Its a great space to display family photos.

Patricia...right. We actually originally thought he was the one who did cabinets, but he's a subcontractor and has a cabinet guy doing them. My husband and I were just talking about what would go into the cabinets. I don't like clutter, so we figured a few special books and maybe some photos.

I second the suggestion of consulting a cabinet builder, esp one who will do a custom design to fit your space.

We had a custom cabinet built for our theater room, with very specific requirements in mind going in. After reviewing the ideas with the cabinet builder, you may find - as we did - that there may be additional options or ideas you hadn't thought of.

In our case, we hid the AV gear within the cabinet, and added some cut-outs for ventilation. We also hid the door to our crawlspace behind the right-side cabinet door. So for us, it was good that we worked with a cabinet guy on the plan, before we got started.
