How would you fix a bad addition?

House was built in the mid '50s; addition consisting of the master bedroom on the main level and a large open room in the basement was built in the late '70s. For unknown reasons, the house has since been given a treatment of vinyl siding, but the addition still has its original hardboard siding. And a flat roof.

What are your amazing ideas of how to update the overall look of the house?

We bought a home that was originally built in 1958 had a flat roof addition added in 1959. This is in the Chicago area lots of snow, a bad idea. We removed the flat roof and roof of the original house. We used an architect to get the proportions correct. Since we bought the house with this plan in mind we understood the work and cost that would be involved. Unfortunately these projects can take more time and money to do right then build from scratch. Good luck

Since you live where there is apparently snow I would change the flat roof to a pitch to avoid structural damage in the future. Any other structural changes might cost more than the house and its location might support. So fix what could be a dangerous design and than focus on landscaping improvements for curb appeal.

Was that addition permitted? Check first, or you may have to tear it off instead of fix it. It looks like it is wider than the former back porch? If possible, I would make it look like 1 wing of the house. Continuous roofline, same width, same siding.
