Contractor Damaged New Appliances

We just completed a full kitchen remodel. Near the project's end, our lead carpenter/contractor scratched new stainless steel double sinks and our new stainless steel double wall ovens. We're very upset to say the least. We have the final walk-through scheduled in 2 weeks. If anyone has had similar experience, we’d be very grateful if you could please share with us how you handled it. Thank you.

I damaged an $800.00 sink while installing it. Got the scratches out before the homeowners ever saw a thing. Took the scratches out of a stainless steel apron sink that arrived damaged.

I've saved appliances that cleaning people have damaged. A fellow Stoneguard installer scuffed an appliance on an install and got it out. Stainless is refinishable.

Thank you for your response, I appreciate very much your comment. And I admire you for knowing how to properly take care of stainless steel...and for doing what needed to be done!

I was delighted to see our new sinks and faucet the afternoon they were installed. It was a Friday. We purposely didn’t use the sinks or faucet over the weekend, just admired the beauty. Then a week later I had to complain to the contractor regarding the 1st time the sink was not treated right. The tile installer used the new faucet and placed his bucket in the brand new satin finish stainless steel Blanco double sink then filled it with water from the brand new professional Kohler Tourrant faucet. This left spots and putty marks in both sinks. The sinks were covered with plastic and I didn’t notice them until 1 week later. After writing up the problem, emailing it to our project coordinators and discussing my complaint with our lead carpenter ...nothing was done. So I researched proper care of stainless steel, attached Blanco information regarding this to an email and sent it to lead carpenter and project coordinators. This was 3-4 weeks ago. There were several weeks of work to still be completed. It wasn’t until my husband spoke with middle management that we saw some action. We were promised things would be taken care of. Then just a few days ago, I tried out the faucet, then removed the 2 Blanco grids so I could use Bar Keepers Friend and a soft cloth to dry off the sinks...and I noticed serious circular scratch marks all around the bottom of the left sink. I don’t know what to do. We still have our final walk through coming up. We still have a few thousand dollars that will be due after the final walk through. I know this may seem like a small thing to someone...but to me it’s as if someone bought a new car, went to pick it up and found the dealer had used a key to create highly noticeable circular scratches all over the hood. PS in addition, our 2 new double wall ovens were “wiped down” inappropriately, showing scratch marks all over the new stainless steel cabinets. This contracting company has high reputation and will continue to come to repair things that are not right, I just don’t know if they can replace the brand new sinks. They don’t seem to know about proper cleaning care of stainless steel. Any advise you can share will be greatly appreciated. Should we insist on a new sink? Or have them “refinish” our brand new satin finish stainless steel sinks? Or withhold funds?

Have the sinks refinished. You're going to scratch them anyway.

I think his reply is to say the least ,smug. To admit to damaging property or saying “you will scratch it anyway” does not show well for him. I made my builder replace a stove and range hood the day before closing. I did not purchase nor would accept repaired appliances due to someone else’s negligence. If a stove was delivered damaged it would be returned and replaced By any retailer. My opinion.

The front of a refrigerator is not the same working surface as the bottom of a stainless steel sink. Geesh.

I don't think I or anyone mentioned a refrigerator. Lol. I think saying you damaged and repaired anything before the homeowner knew about it is far different than having someone hire you to refurbish a used item. Also many mirror or smudge proof stainless finishes regardless of what they belong to do not come out as original. Again my opinion based on facts !
