It may not be suffering at all but merely experiencing shock at being "mauled" by the Dobie. Tiny little prey animals like mice are easily traumatized.....that alone can sometimes kill them without any actual physical injury. I'd just keep an eye on it for a while and see if it calms down and its activity becomes more normal. If it does, then let it loose outside. If not and some sort of injury is obvious, then you can consider how best to dispose of it.

My fiercely hunting tom cat used to bring me all manner of small rodent-like animals to admire. Sometimes they would be obviously traumatized by the experience, showing signs just like you describe but with no obvious injuries. They'd recover in a couple of hours. Other times they would be obviously injured - depends on how aggressively he 'played' with them - and then I would just toss them in a brushy area to meet their maker.......or becomes something larger's snack.

Its moving better but still not normally. It is eating though and exploring the bin and climbing up the cardboard box I set up in the bin to hide in.

I probably would release it outside but we are having terrible weather here at the Jersey shore today. 35 degrees and pouring rain/slush so to me that would be cruel as well.

I will keep watching it. It is really a cute mouse...I am usually terrified of them. My dobie is extremely gentle so it wasn't mauled-he has almost no prey drive whatsoever luckily.

I actually think it got hurt falling from his mouth since there isn't a mark on it. I am glad it wasn't my cat-I found a mauled mouse under a pillow on the floor in my living room last week. I don't know where they are coming from... two mice in one week is weird. I usually have only one per year at most.

Mice are not indoor creatures......if it was moving around outside obviously enough that the Dobie found it, it is perfectly happy to be outside. That's where they typically live year round. They seldom have our concerns about weather conditions!! LOL!!

And I meant 'maul' in the sense that the Dobie was playing with it. He obviously has sufficient prey drive to catch and play with the mouse.

I know they live outdoors and I always take them back out if one gets inside but this one isn't moving normally yet to get back to his/her nest.

And I know you didn't mean maul in that sense of the word. I would use that for my cat (indoor only) but the big Dobie is scared of his own shadow.

Just watch him until tomorrow. Place him in a (not too warm) quiet area and offer a piece of apple (for moisture) along with the cereal, I've taken them from my cats when they've appeared dead, but once placed outside in a secure spot they would recover and scamper away.

The fact yours is moving around the bin sounds like he'll probably bounce back in time.
