This is a great idea. What would you store it in while waiting for the plants to come up?

I use a few old 30 - 90 gal. trash cans that I've gathered over the years. You could just put it in a large garbage bag and keep it out of the weather and it should be fine. You're probably only looking at a few weeks to 60 days before you could put it out. I even have a few 20 - 25 gal. storage totes that work really well for compost. In fact, I put a tote under my sifting screen and sift my compost right into the tote.

Did you fill your raised beds with only compost?

Your beds will eventually settle and need more but that could be some time from now. I like to make a 4ft weed free perimeter around my beds. You could put down paper or cardboard then use compost to hold it in place.

Dave, no, just a top up with compost for the season.

Gumby may have beat me to it, but you might just put the extra compost aside and cover it to keep it dry. The moist compost in the bed will decompose over the season, and the carbon in the organics there will depart in the form of CO2. That is, organics disappear from garden beds! When they do, and your beds are a few inches lower next year, just top it up with your stash that you've kept from decomposing. That is, if you want to store compost and keep it secure, just let it dry out.

Ask your neighbors if they need some. My neighbors and I all share cost of an annual compost load and a lawn aerator.

Hang on to it. The filling in your beds will sink and you'll need to top them up pretty soon.
