Hi, Deb. I think I sent you tronchuda seeds once, didn't I? They aren't treeish at all, not really even as big as most regular collards. They have a distinctive taste, more bitter than any kale. They are supposed to be more heat tolerant than most kale/collards, and they are a beautiful blue-green color, but I personally didn't like them at all.

O.K., I was just wondering. I read they taste like cabbage, and I want something that tastes like collards, so I'm probably going to order some tree collard cuttings to see how they do.

Please let us know how they do--I'd love to have tree collards, but I thought they needed a cooler winter.

I tried tronchuda as well, several years ago. It was tougher and much less tasty than either cabbage, collards or kale, so I decided I did not want waste space on it again.

writersblock, I know it won't do well in your zone, and it's probably iffy in mine, but we do get a few freezes in the winter, so maybe it will be o.k.

carolb_w - Yeah, I don't like tough greens. I love collards, so the thought of having them all year around is fascinating to me.

I was watching one of my favorite YouTube gardening channels the other day and this guy was showing how some of the tree collards put out little side shoots, sort of like tomato suckers, and if you pick them when they are big enough, you can root them. I don't know if they'll grow here, but I'm going to give it a try.
