How many steps are involved? If there are 4 or more risers, a handrail is required by code! This is not an aesthetic issue.....it is a safety issue. Should a visitor, even a delivery person, trip or stumble on steps that do not have a hand rail when required and injure themselves, the homeowner is liable.

A railing does not have to appear dated and a well chosen one will enhance the look of the porch, not detract.
