Fish emulsion to keep out gophers?

Is there any truth to this? That gophers hate the smell of liquid fish and will leave tree roots alone that are heavily fertilized this way? Any one have experience with this method? I gave up trapping i have an acre of swiss cheese and i just want to protect my tree roots at this point.
