I was driving us us1 today and noticed the elder berry grow along the rail road tracks.there were thousands for miles.

I don't know why there aren't more around here, but if the one I got my cutting from puts out berries, I'm sure that will change. Mine is doing very well. I'm going to wait until fall to plant it. I'm hoping it draws more pollinators and birds to my garden.

There is not many around here either.most people consider them weeds. Now that I know where some are I will be going back for berries and hopefully get some going. I was really surprised to see so many. They seem to be in the oldest parts of town and run down areas.

Glenn, get cuttings. They are super easy to root. I just stick mine in water until they start to have a few roots showing, then put them into a pot or into the ground. Also, look for root shoots. Elderberry wine is delish!

I think I will, I have never tried to root one before I normally have to cut them down.

Pea, my daddy did the same thing for blackberries. He's find a field that had some growing and we'd go blackberry picking. We'd also go plum picking, because there were so many plum thickets in the country around where we lived. Fun times.

I made a syrup from the fruits and it was great for colds and flu. I have one in a pot waiting to be planted.

I love elderberry jelly my mom used to make it. I don't know why she stopped. I will have to ask her. All this talk about elderberry is just killing me make me want some and my local ace sells it . I think I will have to go buy some .

My mom stopped too. When gramma moved to the east coast of florida mom didn't make jelly anymore. She used to make elderberry, java plum, and wild grape. She was a social maker, baker and canner...if there was no one to do it with she generally didn't do it.

I made jellies and pickles as gifts. My son was saying the other day that he remembered that I made the best pickles. I just can't seem to grow cucumbers here in FL, and Lord knows I've tried! If my Jerusalem artichokes have a good harvest, maybe I'll try to make some from those. I used to pickle and preserve everything from beets to watermelon rind. A lot of work, though, and I barely have time to do what I need to do now. I was much younger and had more energy then.

I will be able to do some mulberry preserves this year. I picked about 3 gallons from my everbearing this spring and have about a gallon I will be making in to preserves as soon as I get the jars
