I'm guessing you're going more casual here with a view to the outside, so yes, they are just a bit opulent and out of style and too dark and heavy. If you want more help, post more pix of the room.

I like the way they're hung, but I agree that they are too heavy and dark. Maybe a lighter, breezier fabric. Maybe even paint the hanging hardware if that's possible. What look are you going for? What colors do you like?

Thank you so much for your advice Fia. This room was done professionally a few years back and since we are in the process of having wood floors installed I wanted to give the whole room a face lift. Even though it’s a formal area I’d like to go more casual. I was thinking of just leaving the French doors open with no curtains at all but I’m just so undecided.

Yes, the drapes are dated. Take them down for now and see how you like it without drapery. Remove the big plant off coffee table. I think you should post more pics after the floors are done, and we can help further.

I think Angel is right. See how you like the doors without curtains for a while. You can certainly add some later. Would love to see the floor when it's in. New curtains might add a nice pop of color in a lighter shade. But now I'm wondering if you're planning on painting the walls?

The floors should be done by Friday and I will definitely include a new picture. I plan on getting an area rug and new accent chairs as well to tie in with the existing furniture. We recently painted the room a neutral griege so that I won’t be limited when choosing an accent color.

Could you think about lowering the prints over the sofa to eye level and closer together? It would highlight the sofa better.

I'd live without curtains for a while like Angel suggested. You may get new ideas once you see the windows/view without them.

I like the armchairs, they'd look great with bold upholstery or bold paint or both. Are they really going away or could you re-purpose them?

I’ve wanted to move those prints for the longest time P Banos but didn’t want to bother the hubby. Now that we are redoing this room I can revisit that with him for sure! I’ve alresdy given those chairs to my mom so I do need to start from scratch there.

In our house I do all the decorating/installation/repairs. My husband would hang things in the wrong place and make many extra holes! Try making a paper template of the pieces then moving the templates around until you find the best spot. Then you just make a mark the right distance below the top of the template on the wall for your hanger location.

Have you picked additional furniture or are you looking?

That is a great idea P Banos. I have honestly never liked the pictures where they were. I am looking for new accent chairs at the moment but haven’t found any that have made me know those are the perfect fit.

Bet you can get some help here! Post some ideas and people will work in that direction.

When the art goes in, make sure he has some "rules" for hanging it. 5-5-75 is a good rule of thumb that usually works in most situations. Centered 5' above the floor or bottom 5" above furniture, and no wider a piece than 75% of the furniture's width that is hangs above. Usually one frame's width apart works unless you have the really skinny frames; in that case one hand's breadth apart is fine most of the time.

Omg those are great guideline decoenthusiaste! It just makes addressing rehanging those with the hubby so much less stressful.

I have the feeling that when Friday gets here, you want those drapes to be changed.

I have a similar thing as you do, with tall ceilings and a view that's decent enough for people to say that I didn't need window treatments...I just can't seem to deal with a naked window though....

If you can, that's great. If not, I would do something simple and elegant to frame and soften...

I didn’t think I needed window treatments either pennydesign but once I had these installed a few years back at the guidance of an interior designer I really liked them but now I’m just not sure if I should replace them or just leave it without anything at all. Both of my French doors ( in different rooms ) are left “ window treatment “ free. I’m not a fan of window coverings in general, except when necessary ( privacy, climate, etc,). I’d leave them unadorned & see how you like it.

I really think that’s what I’m gonna do K Laurence. Leave the window treatments off to see if we like it with the French doors standing on their own. Thank you so much for your input.

I’m so new to this is didn’t know anything about spam posts ugh. Thanks for the heads up pennydesign. Of course the flooring is taking longer than projected and we are hoping that the first floor is done today. I will try and get a better picture of the sofa that’s staying and this is the least used room in the house as well as the first room one sees upon entering so I do want it to have a bit of a wow factor but still feel inviting.

The windows are beautiful and would benefit from a lighter, cleaners window treatment.

You're doing the right thing looking at chairs first. Will you be doing a rug?

Definitely plan on doing area rugs which add to my feeling a bit overwhelmed by this project. Don’t want to make an expensive mistake!

Don't let decor scare you... :) If it does, you can hire a designer.

What do you want the room to look like? Personally, I see it as a kind of fabulous Hollywood Regency kind of thing with those doors..

I’m thinking if u don’t get rid of the curtains then the room may not feel To much different for u - so I vote to take them down. Maybe even forget about curtains altogether...

The sofa is true to the picture with the base color being brown and I’m not sure of the undertones. Would seal mean it’s on the grey side? I’m intrigued with your vision of Hollywood Regency pennydesign. What does that entail exactly?

My thought is no curtains as well. They're easy to add later. If you're planning on an area rug, I would suggest you find that first. Then you can match pillows, chairs, etc. to colors in the rug.

I had the same thought as pennydesign when I looked at the sofa and the doors - Hollywood Regency. Sort of tailored + glamorous, with metal/mirror/glass/lucite softened with velvets like your sofa. Let me look for some pictures...the first one has the same dimensions as your room.
