Pruning advice needed!

I have a one year old Carmela fairy tail that has a single cane. I’m thinking to take Chris’ suggestion from last year for a plum perfect and cut it back to 8” and mound up mulch to encourage some budding and branching. But I’m not sure that’s appropriate for this variety.

I'm looking for some courage,! Pruning anything other than climbers is a mystery to me. Anybod got any good pruning reference material?

Have you already tried mixing in alfalfa meal into the soil around the base of the rose? Alfalfa meal is used to encourage basal breaks. You should see new basal cane growth as the alfalfa breaks down in the soil.

Caramella is a very vigorous rose so you should be able to get some basal canes if you cut it back to where Chris said. Alfalfa meal has a hormone in it which will stimulate the roots, but the hybridization of the rose gives it the ability to produce many basal canes not the alfalfa meal. Alfalfa meal is like a tonic and can be used on all your plants in the garden.

Thank you. I'm not particularly concerned about it growing more basal canes as much as I'm wondering if the pruning Chris mentioned would make for a better shaped plant in the future. I started this rose odyssey with old fashion teas--which do not like this type of pruning and mostly want to be left alone to do their thing. So I'm a little in the dark how to treat more modern roses with an eye to performance and growth habit.

The hybrid teas are usually the most vigorous of the roses. When you cut it down, it will make new canes coming from the single one. Just watch these canes and if one decides to grow much taller than the others just cut it back even with the others. That should give you a bushy and fairly even shape. Shaping of roses can also be done in the summer because that is when you can see any weird and wonderful growth. Just cut it back so that it fits with the overall shape. Cutting a hybrid tea down hard usually has two effects. One it makes a bushier and more attractive shaped bush or , two, it gets even with you for cutting and throws out tall growth in all direction. Caramella will come back but you will have to have your clippers handy in the summer to tame her. This is a rose that you can't kill as she is far too vigorous.
