Help Choosing Shrubs/Trees

We just moved to NC very close to the coast (2 miles). My backyard is basically a Swamp/Marsh, cant even push the lawn mower through some parts without damaging the ground. The previous owner had a willow tree that I assume used all the water we get here but cut it down and left a giant stump for us to deal with. I'm looking for something that can help with the excess water before I resort to irrigation.

We also get a lot of wind that really tears up the picket fence. I'm not sure if we should plant shrubs around the perimeter or just a few good trees. With the wind I don't want anything too tall that could someday damage the house and it would be nice if it could help save the fence. I don't want to wait 10 years for something to mature nor do I want to spend everyday pruning and raking (so just something perfect ; -)).

We haven't determined the best way to remove that stump yet either and know that could impact whatever we plant in that corner so any advice on that is also appreciated.
