Morning everyone! Am I first again today? Where is everybody? WAKE UP PEOPLE!

Angela, if your electrician doesn't show up today, I may just have to come there and install it myself! Doesn't he know we're all waiting to see it?

What is a nexus card Kimdee. My friend asked me today if she go to Toronto for the August break would I go with her. Coming to see you Kimdee.
Angela, check for a link above! Someone in Florida is looking for hurricane new windows advice!

Everything you never wanted to know!
Angela -- I don't live anywhere near Toronto! It's a four + plane ride from there! I'm closer to California than to Florida! Nexus card means I can bypass the giant lineup at security/customs when I fly to the US and home again.
Oh well Kimdee, cannot come drive you nuts, probably go to California then, drive you and Bobbi nuts
  • 12 years ago
Angela, did you see the link I posted for you? Way, way up there?
Yes, I did Bobbi, posted a question to her, hopefully she answers because I found out that it depends where in Florida she is and then I can probably help her more.
    Hmmm... who knew?!?

Thanks Judy! I'll let my sister know!
Angela, I posted a link to a chrome shelf unit you might think about for the left wall, it's way up there.

Great job ez..... You are an angel! :-)
I hope you don't have to find a new weed guy now.
Bobbi-I like that stand but not sure if I want something that tall in the space. Eztia-have to find some place for my plants and drinks. And no space in the lower cupboards that was why I wanted a bench with storage.

Just returned from my friend's new house. You all would love what she and her husband have done. They had a budget and they stuck to it. She used lovely colors like BM collingwood, shale, pale blue ceilings with fixtures that throw light all over in an almost star burst pattern. Ceilings done in a semi-gloss. Just lovely.

She found a wonderful sideboard marked to half-price and it has become a two sink vanity in the bathroom. Hardware is from IKEA.

Counters in the kitchen are white granite.

Yummmmmmmy! Of course the ocean view isn't too shabby either. I hope she posts pix.

    Nighty night.

Eztia-I am working on a paper right now and trust that I don't worry too much. I am a real pack rat and have too much stuff so updating the house is a work also on less is more and it is still hard for me. But I will figure something out and push come to shove my plants will stay in the corner. I have to live here so at the end of the day will do what I feel comfortable with.

Wow every one has been very chatty today! I got home around 9:00 as it was too dark to do any more gardening. I really enjoy putzing around in my yard thinning plants, pulling weeds, deadheading flowers etc but I've noticed that I can't keep up! As of now, I'm trying to keep up with 5 neglected yards...3 from the project houses we're trying to get ready for sale, the one from the house where my business partner is living and then the yard at my own house.

My business partner doesn't know much of anything about gardening but it is starting to catch his interest a wee bit. The lilies opened the first blooms today and he was commenting about them and also getting into the hunt for ripe strawberries. The strawberries are mixed together and growing through with mint and hosta plants and a few weeds/grass plants as well so every time I pick strawberries or pull weeds I cut back more mint plants. It keeps them from taking over completely and I just love the smell of fresh cut mint. That house should be a fairly easy yard to maintain once I get everything weeded since it has a big garage and large concrete driveway taking up much of the backyard.

Nup, Roo just finished wading through after deleting 4 pages of emails, not unglued, just ready for bed again and totally forgotten half the chat.

Absolutely poured rain all last night and was really cold, I just couldn't warm up, I think it was down to around 6 - 8 deg. Of course I left the window wide open all night which probably didn't help. Aussie DD arrived this morning with one sick grand in tow and has gone to Ikea with BH looking for a new wardrobe for one bedroom. Just found a cute little bleached white table on sale for $10 so BH is treating me - WOW Big Spender, I am so privileged!!!! LAdd has a really bad headache today so went back to bed so I have spent the morning teaching Miss 7 how to knit while the two boys have amused themselves and watched a few movies.

I didn't like the idea of Angela putting more glass in her eating nook but I do like that stand you found Bobbi. I'd like a nice plant on top, drinks the next two shelves and something ornamental on the bottom. Like those paintings too Angela, I think they would look great on your wall if the oranges blend, the dark frames would make them very distinctive.

Astraea, the best product for anti-ageing is GENES!!!! Second best is sunscreen. Even as a teenager, I had a thing about keeping my face out of the sun and I always wear large brimmed hats when I know I am going to be outdoors for long periods. When Zinc went coloured I used to use tan zinc like a pancake makeup when I played tennis (which was 3 days a week) so I never got burned. I started using Avon makeup years ago because it was the only one that didn't make my face itchy and have pretty much kept with it since. Did you know that Avon's sunscreen products were the first to use the SPF before anyone even knew about SPF? It took many years before other companies caught up with them, they were the world leaders in Sunscreen.

    Who is my "mate" BTW.

Haven't checked the condo chat, I thought I had got through to her when she admitted she changed from using colours to going neutral. She just hasn't been true to herself and that will fail every time.

Gotta go check Kutchie's blog too.

Roo - How long are your DD and the grands staying with you?
Four weeks, Linda. They usually stay at least 6 but unfortunately school now has to take precedence and we certainly didn't want the kids basically having 3 winters in a row. They are both water babies and really love the summer.
Roo-I like that shelf but not sure if I want it that tall.
Goodnight OLLDs. Sweet dreams and love to you all. xo
  • 12 years ago
Well Miami beat San Antonio Spurs and there will be a game 7...
Angela - maybe 3 shelves high? I will have to see what I can find.
Angela, I was just thinking something simple like the first photo - you might have to have something made to measure, but you could take out as much corner as you could spare, make the shelves the height you need and have as many as you need and sit the unit from the floor or in the middle of the wall. Also found 2nd photo - this could be a solid unit set at bench height with a lift up lid - keep dust out. I like the rounded front to keep the flow of your round table.

    MP...Hope your day got better
Angela...good luck on all that hard school work u r doing!
Roo....Your mate (a crabby poster) must be from your country-I am guessing that is why he was called your mate...He does NOT share your diplomatic temperament! Hope the little one feels better! Hope u r enjoying the visit...congrats on the good find on the $10 bargain!!
Linda..your plants sound lovely..I have heard mint takes over...I have some terragon in big whiskey barrels and it gets about 8 feet high...if in ground, I believe it also would take over!!
Eztia...U were thinking of others and not yourself!! Hope your yard guy keeps u on!! Be good to your body & rest!!
@Astraea...we may both be in luck...My great grandmother made 97 ....virtually wrinkle-less!
@bobbi..U r right I think, about the collagen thing! I also didn't get any belly stretch marks whilst pregnant. (And it was HUGE)!
-I do not plan to age anyhow...old age can go fly a kite...I refuse to become "old". (Far too immature for that)!
    xoxo all of u...Ni night!!

Roo - As you said, there have been so many posts, it would be impossible for me to find the one where I think I referenced "mate" .. probably another poster from Australia .. and I don't even remember what he posted about! We don't control our genes, and I'm not out in the sun much, but moisturizer is important, and they're doing so much research now on natural ingredients that are strong anti-oxidants. I just tried something new .. we'll see what "magic" it does!!

Jayme - My grandmother was a firm believer that makeup that covered your skin got into the fine lines & wrinkles, making it look worse. She may have been right!
Astraea - I worked out it was the architect guy promoting Ikea furniture. He comes from Victoria - no one north of the border takes much notice of them.

I was being a bit tongue in cheek with the genes, but they are what makes the difference to how we age. BH's mother never used moisturiser or makeup or anything on her skin and it is only now she has hit the 90s that lines are starting to show. There are certain types of make up that can show wrinkles and lines more than others, eyeshadows and lipsticks with a frosted finish definitely shouldn't be used after a certain age. Matte makeup is much kinder.

I am a little hesitant with a lot of skin care claims, there are so many conflicting opinions, and with the zillions of dollars profits cosmetic companies pocket, one has to wonder at times. My problem too is that I am just not pedantic enough to apply things regularly. I do remember once, many years ago when Nutrimetics became available here, I tried the avocado eye oil fastidiously and after three weeks I was suddenly receiving compliments on my long, thick eyelashes. Then they changed the product to a gel and it didn't seem to work as well.
Roo - I skip all the advertising hype about skincare products, but go directly to their list of ingredients. I started a "master list" of ingredients, looking up what 3rd party sites say they do. To "evaluate" a product, I match the ingredients to my master list, making note of where each item is in sequence, because that identifies the % each represents. Then I get a total "score" & average based on the number of ingredients .. and compare those averages. I also note any items where there's a scientific concern about using them. Right now my master list has 395 items on it. Yes, it's very time consuming, but at least I haven't had any negative reactions to what I've tried so far! I used Jurlique for a while, which I think is Australia-based, but theren's no longer a store near me.

@roo and astraea...Have u seen those handheld things that massage the face with radiofrequency wave technology...at a lower level than used at doctor's office....I was tempted to get one, I swear! The older I get the more I am worrying about my skin. So far it's not wrinkly...I have very faint fine lines near my eyes...so I apply sunscreen and hope for the best. I do know exfoliating products work to an extent. Smoking is one thing that is bad for skin...I see many, many patients who smoked, and IMO they age a lot worse. I am sure, the amount they smoke, how long, etc plays into this. Nicotine vasoconstricts vessels...(tightens them up, making it harder for freshly oxygenated blood to arrive to tissue)...depriving the skin of nourishment. My hubby quit smoking and had a reversal of some lines in his face.
Jayme - I'm very leery of "appliances" like that; if they need to be trained & certified at a doctor's office, is it something that regular people can do properly on their own faces, or is the home-version even effective compared to what a doctor uses?

What do RF waves do to all the layers of skin, is it a good thing long-term? Is it better as a preventive measure for younger women, since older skin becomes thinner & more fragile?

Aunt Eztia- I am doing good today just tired, the flashes are killing me. Actually remember to take me medicines today so that is a good thing. I tell you working in geriatrics make me want to take care of myself and that is so important.
Angela, 13 years of flashes here. I cannot believe it's gone on this long! Since before 9/11!
    Sorry about the flashes Bobbi

Astraea (and others) - don't you just love the advertising for all these rejuvenating creams and youth elixirs that show them on a 30-something model?

I got an anti-ageing book one time that recommends taking Vitamin A too. Never tried it because I couldn't find any. I stopped colouring my hair years ago because I heard the chemicals can bring on dementia and decided to age gracefully and other than keeping moisturiser up on my face and body, I'm happy. Funny thing is my hair is such a salt and pepper colour, I get so many compliments on it and am frequently asked what brand and colour do I use.

Thankfully, I missed the flashes!!!! I don't think I could handle them.
Roo - Definitely annoys me! I happened onto a blog last week, where posters had to identify their age range, and most were young, so I posted point blank that I honestly coudn't care less what a 30-something thought about an anti-aging product, because at her age, I had perfect skin & no need or desire to spend so much money on "looking younger"!

I've gotten very outspoken & snippy, on websites & blogs, when they use very young models for products designed for people 50+ .. whether that's clothes or skin care. Do I really care that a dress looks good on a knock-kneed "giraff" who's 5'10" tall & weighs all of 105 lbs?!
Good one, Astraea, I really feel as one ages one does loose patience with stupidity. I have a very low level of tolerence these days. Maybe it is the fact that the longer we live the wiser we definitely get - until we loose the plot totally. Women's bodies change as they age too so clothes for a 20 something are rarely the right shape for a 70+.
Roo-I am doing grey hair also
    GREY ROCKS!!!
No grey. Yet. But. I did find... one. white. eyebrow. hair. WTH!

Kd - luckily I wear glasses full time now - I can't seem to think straight without them anymore - but I had them off the other day and suddenly realised I don't seem to have eyebrows at all anymore. Heehee - no plucking!!!
