Centered on the wall. When will you ever be able to see if it's centered on the island since your back will be turned to the island when facing the fireplace and your back to the fireplace when facing the island.

BTW: I would vet your kitchen in the Kitchen Forum.

How will you furnish the space? How many pieces and what sizes? What will you be doing in that space--relaxing, entertaining (how many people)? What is the desired character of the space? For example, it's possible, based on your furnishings and layout that you don't have room or need for the fireplace.

The answers to all of these questions are much important than simple symmetry or asymmetry...

Symmetry is much easier to perceive on a floor plan than in real life. CP is right you will notice the fireplaces position on the wall not how it lines up with the island. Even on the wall, you have some latitude to place it to work with your furniture.

Center the fireplace on the wall.

Thank you all for your comments. This really gave me clarity. Fireplace will now be centered on wall! Spending so much time looking at the (aerial) view of the floor plan had clouded my perception. TV will most likely go over fireplace. For those of you mentioning the kitchen, what exactly do you not like?

Good decision to center it on the wall. Less good decision to put the tv over it. I know a lot of people do that, but -- aesthetic issues aside - many people find that sitting on furniture and craning their necks up to watch tv is not a comfortable position. If you can't find another place to locate it, like on another wall or on top of a media cabinet, at least get a mount that allows you to pull the tv down, such as this one that lets you pull the tv away from the wall to clear the fireplace and locates the screen more than 2' lower than the stored position for the tv: Fireplace tv mount

Everyone is different on how they want a kitchen to function, but if it were mine I usually do all my prep between the sink and the stove. I would eliminate the wall ovens and put the fridge in its place. I would then do a 36 inch slide in range. It would give a nice working space. Also the area where the shelves are seems like wasted space to me. I would just expand the pantry all the way over to the post.

No one needs to crane their neck watching tv. Get aMantle Mount and the problem is solved.

It's not about what we think about your kitchen because we aren't the kitchen experts. They reside in the kitchen forum. If you're going to spend good money building a kitchen you might as well ask the experts.

I would NOT center the fireplace because I would put the TV and console and all that paraphernalia beside the fireplace. I like an off set fireplace that has a TV beside it. Like a lot of these on Google Images.....

I really like the above look and it especially looks good if the room is large. But, do a furniture layout before your final design!!

On to Kathi's comment, we went with an offset fireplace with space for a large TV beside. I've found this convenient and does not detract from the fireplace, but provides better tv viewing. I do suggest being carful with the balance.

Nothing wrong with having a TV over the fireplace if proportions are right. Type, size and placement of fireplace, size and height of TV and above all viewing distance.

Our island is longwise in kitchen and left edge is centered with the very long room. This may not work for most folk or rooms.

mojomom, I feel like if you have the opportunity to design around what you will be doing, it will look so much better!! Your room looks very nice!

Wait! Don't center the fireplace on the wall, center it in the room, particularly if you have a ceiling fixture or ceiling coffer to center on. Doors sometimes throw off the apparent "center", but the fireplace appears to be in the right spot according to the plan you posted. Don't let asymmetrical built-ins throw you. Mojomom's example is a good one. If you need more convincing, send me an email. I have dozens of examples.

Ditto what others have said about figuring out your living room layout and where you want your TV before deciding on fireplace.

Here is ours.. Fireplace NOT centered on the living wall, but centered with the island. Not because I cared about the island in relation to it at all but it just worked out that way as I did not want a TV over the fireplace. I wanted our TV to the right of the fireplace. I can tell you living in the space, having a not centered fireplace does not bother me one bit and the way it's laid out makes complete sense. We also debated putting our fireplace on the bottom wall in the picture, but that's an interior wall and it would have been more difficult to vent and my DH wanted a straight shot at the TV from the kitchen since he's the cook and the watcher of all sports.
