PLEASE HELP !! Single guy with no idea lol !

Hi

Please help me with some thoughts as i live alone and need some other opionions.

I am currently redoing my kitchen ( current kitchen is ivory ) I have ordered a slick gloss white handleless kitchen with all appliances integrated. The black quartz floor is staying and i am getting a black quartz worktop. My question is i am re-tiling the wall and thinking of white metro/subway tiles all the way down to the worktop with a dark grout with the white tiles , Do you think this will look good ? or if not any other ideas . Thanks Greg

Groveaxle if I could ask you one last favour I would be forever grateful , could you do one final pic with red but only going half up the wall so all along but just up till the bottom of the hood / extractor and then painted white above .thanks so much

I wouldn't use a black quartz counter with the black gloss floor. Looks kind of dated. Too much gloss going on and too glitzy instead of stylish. White would work better as a counter and be more modern. If you want a dark counter I would use a leathered dark grey granite. You also need some warmth and I would bring in some wood somewhere.

I love the teal the groveraxle did! It's fresh, looks good with the black and white and the red accessories really pop! If it were my kitchen, I'd choose the teal! I like the red second and I'd only do the green if I loved it and was staying long-term. It's a great color but I think it would be hard to face in the morning.

BTW greg, what's the black behind the range? Is that a piece of the countertop material?

go with what mmilos said :)

Thanks Carolina ! That’s the way I am heading - teal or red . Also do you hi knit would look fine if I just did it up to the cooker / extractor and across ? And then painted the top half of the wall ? So it would only come half way up the window .
Yes it’s an upstand part of the countertop but that will be going when new countertop in installed . Also my floor is black quartz and I have chosen a matching countertop , do you think to glitzy with black quartz countertop ? ( bits of mirror sparkles )

No, I don't think it will be too glitzy. Besides, that's sort of what you're trying to achieve; a kitchen with a real WOW factor. Here's a bit of warning: If the range you pick requires you to do an initial burn, do it before the quartz goes on the wall. Sometimes the heat from that can crack the quartz. Talk to your appliance dealer about this.

I have now discarded a lot of options and down to three , either white tile like in the this computer generated image of my new kitchen or red or teal glass blacksplash half way up wall to Coker hood and along the wall and then paint top half of wall . Thoughts ?

    Sometimes...even if you don't care for a comment...there is a thanks button.

(Sorry. I am cranky this morning for my own reasons.)

All great suggestion. Good luck with your project.

Carolina ok now down to just two ! Discarded red , so either Teal or white Tiles like in pic a couple posts up ? If I went Teal could I just go half way up wall and paint top half or better to do whole wall ?

As a woman that's probably fairly close in age to yourself, I have two suggestions...

    1. Don't do polished black countertops. If you want to do black, go with a honed or leather finish. Be sure to read up on the maintenance difference with these finishes compared with the traditional polished finish.

    2. I think the painted glass and the white subway both work and are modern/stylish/attractive but give off very different impressions. If you're more of a chill dude and want your kitchen to come off as high-end overall without a lot of overt attention to anything in particular then I'd go with the white subway, stacked, with white grout (and probably in a size that isn't 3'x6'). If you're looking to make a statement and are maybe more of a "flashy" guy (don't mean that in a bad way) then I'd do the teal glass.

This of course isn't a judgment about anyone's personality or to say that these things always go together, this is just the difference in vibe that I, as a younger female, would take from the two options.

pennydesign is referring to the green "say thank you to lindsey" tab. It isn't a command, it's a link and when you tap it, it automatically adds a "thanked by gregc72" note under the comment. It's just a nice way to acknowledge that you've read a comment, even if you don't agree with it enough to "like" it.

CAC 546 ! I guess I need to go for Teal then ! Half way up the wall ok ?
Thanks Lindsey , I genuilly forgot to like , have liked everyone else even if I did not agree , just missed that posting . Really sorry ! I am very grateful for everybody’s help
  • 8 years ago

    The teal would be smashing.

But cac546 brought up a good issue: my aversion to subway tile was predicated on the idea that you were referring to traditional 3x6 white subway just because that is the *only* way I use the word.

So my answer changes just a tidge if the tile is a larger format. A larger scale rectangular white tile stacked would look great. I still think something a little more adventurous will be a better choice (do it while you can and you don't have to think about a partner's preferences too, right?) But I am not as firmly against the white rectangles as I would be traditional 3x6 subway!

"Thanks Lindsey , I genuilly forgot to like , have liked everyone else even if I did not agree , just missed that posting . Really sorry ! I am very grateful for everybody’s help"

No worries *at all*. My comment was 100% a public service announcement because a lot of posters just don't realize what that tab is. Lurkers or future readers of this post might learn something too :)

And this thread is considerably more positive than some are, and it's nice as a poster to be able to thank some one for taking the time to comment even if you can't "like" the comment!

Yeah that’s my two choices now , white times stacked or teal glass. If went teal would it be ok to only go up half way and then paint top section of wall white ?

I know that color is a personal choice...but, to be honest. If I went into a bachelor pad and there was anything teal, I would imagine that an ex had chosen it.

Yes. I know. That's all sorts of color-sexism right there...What can I say? I'm rather verbal about men wearing pink also.

Just my opinion which can be ignored.

On a side note my bathroom got finished yesterday ! very happy with it !

Also...I don't think you should chop up your kitchen any more. Half way will give you yet another rectangle in there. Visually, it will give you a headache. Same with any more tile. Which is why I suggested what I did earlier. Panels of some sort will give you a cleaner look.

So Penydesign would you go for red or stacked white subway tiles ? Thanks

    Ok, your bathroom is gorgeous.

But now I'm thinking teal in the kitchen and teal in the bathroom is too much of a good thing lol!

So I'm going to completely backtrack and say white rectangular tiles, in a format larger than 3x6, stacked for the kitchen.

Or black, the same as the counter. I'm still not over that idea ;-)

The bathroom is more blue than teal , think it’s the lighting but point taken , thanks for your comment
  • 8 years ago

    Neither...sorry!

    Hi
It’s just coming up as the google homepage
  • 8 years ago

Sorry, It works for me...It's Planilaque.

Ikea used to do a panel system, also, but they're not doing it anymore. I'm not saying those, specifically, but that kind of clean look would be preferable to me.

    OR

Something else totally different...It hasn't come to me what yet :(

Teal and all the way up. Your hood is very dramatic and to put 2 colors behind it will detract from it. Love your bathroom, too. I wish I had your budget!

Does your kitchen open onto another room?

Gorgeous bathroom!!! My vote , white subway too. :)

You can always bring in strong color with some accessories imo

Ignore my other comments, I didn't see the panels mentioned earlier.

I think you should do what YOU love. What will make you smile when you walk into your kitchen?

Clearly, you DO know what you're doing. :)

Don't let too many voices confuse the vision. Good luck and I'm so looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Please post update pictures.

    The bathroom looks amazing!

Did you use a designer for that, or was it all your own design? Get their input on your kitchen...or you don't need help from anyone. :-)

Thanks ! No kitchen is self contained
It was my design but I stole it from all different pics of this site and came up with it
  • 8 years ago
Was a lot easier than this kitchen lol

Great job, Greg. I like the rendering of the white stacked tile for your kitchen. Clean, modern and simple.

And if I went with a stacked white tile would you use a darker grout like grey or silver grey ? To hide dirt a bit more
  • 8 years ago
    last modified: 8 years ago

Okay...Look at your bathroom...It's perfect. And no..bathrooms are not easier.

You have an innate ability to know what works. In your bathroom...You put a curvier sink to balance out the straight lines of the mirrors. You broke it all of that up with the colorblocked mosaic tile....

Listen...I am not a pro--I just have been around and I know what works for me and I know where to put the ottoman :).

Do you want more angles in your kitchen? Then subway tiles will achieve that. Do you want a cleaner look? More visual interest or less? (Considering other elements in there)

Lol you are giving me too much credit ! I just liked the basins ! Was not done to balance any lines , just looked good to me . I really just looked at pics and went from there but th aks anyway
  • 8 years ago

Heck, you even put down the lid to photograph the toilet. I would estimate about 1 in 10-15 posters does that.

You have a great tiler...use the same people to do your kitchen tile. Maybe have them mock up some with gray grout and some with white. I would try to get fairly large tiles...perhaps in same proportions as your floor tile. This would minimize grout lines.

I must say that teal in tiles also looks gorgeous
  • 8 years ago

Groveaxel you have been a MASSIVE help as with everyone else , could i ask you one last favour and i will be forever grateful , could you do the following pic attached next with a red glass wall and then with a Teal glass wall so i can see with my new kitchen cabinets what it will look like , need to make a final decision tomorrow . thanks so much

ID is usually not one size fits all--How long will you live there? For this venture-I am inclined to advise neutralizing the permanent applications { TILE] and adding pop of color in accessories-rug-even paint. Trendy bold colors--never become less than bold and trendy. Resale is also an issue.-Glass tile is universally liked-and feels modern. For what you need-stone is affordable as well.
