There are no consistent issues that I’m aware of- of course, I lose things here and there for no particular reason but I think that’s just how it goes.

"Routine" is not a valid answer. They should have good valid reasons. They might believe in what they're doing, but they have to have valid reasons they can back up. Get a second opinion. Best chances are it's unnecessary.

I'd like to hear their defense when you question them about it's use.

It is generally done by supplying carbohydrates and minerals (usually from molasses) to the soil bacteria. Soil bacteria then consumes the sugars and double in population every 20 minutes or so until there is a food shortage, and they all die off, leaving you right back where you started, except with moths flying out of your wallet and a landscaper that is laughing his way to the bank.
