How much space between the fridge & island?

Hi Houzz Squad! We're looking for some advice on fridge arm clearance. Our fridge column arm is 30 inches but 31 inches when open. The island overlaps the middle line between the fridge/freezer by about 10 inches to the right. So basically 20 inches of the fridge side has nothing in front of it. The area in front of the pantry/freezer/fridge is strictly a walkway and place to open fridge. There is no cabinetry to open on that side of the island nor will there be bar stools on that side. What is the minimum clearance you would be comfortable with? 12 inches + 31 inches (fridge arm open) would be 43 for example.

Note: Every 1 inch we would add to the distance would shrink the island by 2 inches because walkways will be the same on both sides. So 44 inches of space in between would make our island width 78 inches wide. 45 inches would be 76 wide. 43 inches would be 74 wide...etc

Appreciate all of your comments as always!!

Go to an appliance store and find your fridge model. Open it and measure how much room you take up with the door open....this is the space that you would love to have. But 42 inches is the narrowest aisle you will want to go.

The refrigerator is the most used appliance in the kitchen and everyone uses it....keep it out of the traffic pattern as much as possible...good luck.

Your refrigerator door is not going to be open except when someone is getting something out of it. When the refrigerator is closed the distance between it and the island is sufficient. If you expect others to be in and out that distance may feel confined. Will it bother you if someone gets in your way? Your distance is normal to me, but I think the answer is subjective.

If you can afford 30 and 24 column refrigeration, you can afford a KD, to make certain all is functional in the kitchen? Open or closed, I like 48 ........

We are not seeing your entire kitchen so advice is not necessarily accurate or the best for you

48” minimum in a two cook kitchen. 54”-60” if one of the aisles is a major traffic aisle or has back to back seating.

If that island is in proportion it is too big how do plan on cleaning it for starters it will a walk all the way around every time you want to wipe it down.IMO 48” is the min. in front of a fridge anything less gets pretty squishy and if you have the space I would make the island smaller before I would give up a decent sized walk way.

My only comment is that you don't necessarily have to keep the walkways equal. A matter of a few inches will be unnoticed from the angles at which they will be viewed.

Give us a detailed floor plan, including measurements, for the entire kitchen. I find it is more important to have the proper spacing between the oven and the island, or the dishwasher and the island. You want to be able to walk past an open oven or open dishwasher. Details, please.

Hey Guys! Thanks so much for all of yourHere is a more detailed floor plan that is more drawn to scale. This is changed around to match the suggestion of putting more room in front of the fridge and back walkway where the range top is. Obviously it is not symmetric on the 2 opposite sides but it sounds like that doesn't matter. We have a 2nd prep sink in the island which is why the island was bigger but we shrunk it some per a few suggestions.

What do you think? Is this how you would set it up?

Swap the sink and the MW, and have the MW face the fridge. Put in a pull out trash next to the sink. Things come out of the fridge and go to the MW. And most of the trash is generated during prep.

What are your plans for ventilation and makeup air that the 54” hood over that 48” rangetop will require?

I’m no pro, but I do cook, and FWIW, 54” between the island and a cooktop is entirely too far. I don’t personally care what the various codes or designers claim, they aren’t chefs. Unless you have an army of people who have to walk behind you while you are cooking (and if you do, redesign the space so you don’t), you want to be able to turn around from the range and take no more than a step to get to the island where you are doing your prep. Anything more and it’s annoying.
The MW in the island is annoying unless one decides on a drawer unit. Most families use the microwave second only to the fridge, and bending over / kneeling all the time stinks. I would put a wall oven under the cooktop and put the MW and Oven combo where that double oven shows. No bending for the MW, and people use two ovens at once usually about twice a year.

Totally agree on 54" being too much. Mine is 44" and feels like a lot.
