I never buy stock that has been whacked back like this.

Try looking for a tree at a real plant nursery, not a glorified hardware store. At least most of them are purchasing the plants directly from a qualified and experienced grower/vendor and are receiving premium or first grade plants rather the seconds the box stores tend to stock. There is a reason their plants are so cheap.........

So many reasons not to buy...my reason is that it doesn't have any decent buds!

For $1 I might put it on the back 40 and see what happens. For money I cared about, no way.

You should walk "by" this tree.

Looks like Norway Maple which, if the top looks like that, probably already has serious root structure issues and is destined for a short life. The branch structure is easily fixed at this point...the roots are a more difficult task.

Other than some very basic Japanese maples, no deciduous trees at my HD are priced higher than $50.......and that is dirt cheap for a tree of any size!!

That is wild! In Canada, they go for $80-200! Also, I work for a nursery, that is an Autumn Blaze maple, or red maple. I can tell by the small buds.

looks like inartful shipping pruning ... its probably either do that ... or it shows up with a bunch of broken branches which you would hate more ...

the tree would outgrow that.. imo ... for the price... i think you have a camera trick going.. making it look 20 feet tall .... i limb up my trees .. and i bet.. everything below the Y would eventually be pruned off ... so who cares if its been cut back now ... but.....

but i agree.. i dont like the high 'Y' ... and for that reason.. i would walk on by .... yeah.. i could prune one side off ... but why ... find another ...

btw.. if it is a norway ... i hope you know all the drawbacks to that type of maple .... you can do better ...
