Should I continue?

Just started to distress this piece of furniture. Should I continue or leave a white?

Far better to repaint it white or another color you especially like.

(But then, I've never understood why people buy jeans with rips and tears already in them either.)

I agree with suezbell. I'm not a fan of distressed furniture. I would paint it white or another color that suits the room.

I agree with wood rose, you are looking at it daily, make it a love affair. Also consider what else is in the room, does the distressed look match and create a unified space? Something to consider as you update this piece is how this piece is heavy, adding some legs will balance this out and create the feeling of more space in the room. Good luck! I personally love the characteristics of the shabby chic/ French Country styles just be sure that the furniture and decor compliments one another.

This is a piece that was left behind when I bought my home in December. Thank you all for the suggestions. Greatly appreciated.

Still haven't put the hardwear yet either.

Distressing should look real. So far you've done a good job of hitting the spots that would be banged up with one exception: the base. So I would do a bit around the bottom (think of it getting wacked with a broom, mop, or vacuum or a kid driving a Tonka truck into it). Maybe a bit around the hardware on the raised trim. Then leave it. Less is more here :)

Not a fan of distressed. I would paint it white, or some other color that will accent the rest of your décor.

Any recommendations on what to use. I've been using a 220 wet sand block with a wet rag.

Just continue on with that then. What you've done looks good.

looks fine as is. I'd stop.

I love distressed pieces. So far you have done a great job. Just make sure its something you really love before/if you continue. Otherwise, paint it a new color to give it a nice facelift and leave off the distressing part.

I love this distressed piece of furniture. It looks very nice in the picture.

Why are you trying to make it look like a 'Before' picture?

I just don't get distressed (or shabby chic) furniture. It always looks so fake. For instance--there is paint missing from the bottom of grooves on that dresser. Normal wear always occurs at the outermost points that are most exposed to rubbing, not the deeper parts that are protected.

The rounded column detail on the corner is pristine, yet the groove where it meets the body is missing paint. How could that happen in real life? (it doesn't)

The white's not a great color, so I'd spend some time painting it a better color or stripping it down to the original wood if that white isn't a factory finish.

I like what you’re doing and listen to recommendations about where to distress more for an authentic look. I personally wouldn’t leave that all white only because the details get lost. Distressing or antiquing helps bring out the carving and details. That’s actually something else you can do: apply a glaze or antiquing medium or wax to settle into the carvings without distressing. Whatever look you like best is the way to go. It’s your house!

I usually don't like distressed furniture, but what you have done looks great! If you love it - continue! And I agree - less is more!

Never understood taking a perfectly good piece and making it look like it has been in the dump.Shabby chic has died thank god.

What does the rest of your furniture look like in your home? Do you have pieces that have a farmhouse look to them? Distressed furniture goes well with the farmhouse theme. If your house is more modern, then I would paint it a color you like and go with that!
