bathroom ventilation fan with or without light?

We are debating whether or not we want to get a unit with the light and fan or just the fan and a separate light. Has anyone regretted their decision of getting the combo? We are having a hard time finding one that we actually like. The majority of the ones that we’ve seen are round and we are really looking for something square. We are considering getting a small vent fan and putting it over the toilet and just getting a separate wall mount unit for the center of the bathroom. Thoughts? The bathroom is around 89 sq ft. We can’t put the vent or light in the shower as we are doing a walk in shower with a centered rain head.

Here are the ones we’ve seen but we aren’t sold on any. Any help/ feedback is much appreciated!

Light, heating lamp, and exhaust fan combination. Look at Broan.

We have one of those whisperlites with light and nightlight . Actually two. We have them with 15-30-60-90 timer buttons. One is in 34x60 shower, other is just outside of tub/shower. Works great, quiet.

I want my bathroom fan to be as inconspicuous and quiet as possible, but also powerful. Lighting is a separate function. Personally, I would not make my decision based on whether or not the fan had a light. That's not what the fan is for, and having to take that into consideration only confused the issue for me.

(I have an aversion to the sounds of mechanicals in a house, particularly HVAC units. For whatever reason a lot of people seem to like a loud bathroom fan, but not me.)

I ordered a couple of Panasonic FV-08VS3 ventilation fans from Amazon and couldn't be happier. I can't really hear mine running, but it works extremely well. It's also relatively small. As an added bonus it's "low profile" meaning it fits in very tight spaces in the ceiling, so you don't have to worry about a beam or whatever getting in the way.

I don't have shower lights, either. I have a ceiling light in the bathroom and lights on either side of the vanity.

I'm sad to say when I looked at my order history to get the model number I discovered it's not available anymore through Amazon.

do you have a photo? I’m not sold on either the light/vent combo and I’m not loving the idea of having two separate units (obvi need to choose one ).

Are your fans like the recessed cans? If so, how do you get everything to match and look centered?

They have a switch fro each function: fan / light /heat. Use the function you want.

I don't know model etc. but my sister has a can light (small) that is also a fan, and the motor is several feet back in the exhaust ducting run. So its pretty much completely silent and works very well.

We had a fan without a light and replaced it with one that has a light. I like having the extra light in there, even though it's not over the shower, it's located over the commode for some reason ;)

We have a walk in shower that has a centered shower head. We added waterproof recessed can lights and a separate exhaust fan. In the toilet room we have a separate exhaust fan along with lighting. Don't need to use fan everytime for using bathroom but do use everytime we shower

The quality of the light included in a fan is never of any quality. These are two separate functions. I have lighting at the mirror and in the general walkway. I have the exhaust fan positioned over the toilet.

I prefer having a separate fan and light. I like the flexibility of using light versus fan. When it's dark in the morning I don't necessarily want a light shining down on me the way it does with a combo unit.

Whether round or square, unobtrusive is what you want. Generally, you're not looking at your ceiling so something that fades into the background is preferable to a "design statement". More important is function. You want a fan that is properly sized (in terms of air changes per hour) for the room. When I did mine, I also paid a lot of attention to how noisy the fan was going to be. Anything over 2 sones is way too noisy for me. But because I was a new homeowner I allowed my HVAC guy to convince me that 2.2 sones would be fine. It isn't.

Oh, and like everyone else has said and for the same reasons, separate fan and light.

I replaced mine a couple of years ago by myself. I looked into a light combo but decided instead that getting something with the right CFM for the room size, and relatively quiet, with good online reviews, was the most important factor. I bought a Panasonic and it cut down dramatically on moisture problems in the bathroom. I don't miss having a light on it at all.

We were looking at the Panasonic whisper series. The cfm is 110 and the sone is 0.03. My concern is that the light will not be bright enough to reach the shower area. We are also doing vanity lights but the vanity isn’t that close

If you post a floor plan of your bathroom showing where your electrical boxes are, we can make better suggestions.

This particular unit is on sale and seems to have rave reviews. Again, my concern is the light not being bright enough

Two fans in a room that small makes no sense. And toilet smells don't rise straight up. You need one fan. Period.

Most of the combo lights give off very unattractive light. I can see getting one that has a motion sensor and putting a very, very dim bulb (10-20 watts, tops) in it for middle-of-the-night trips, but that's it. Then you'd have the regular room lights on a separate switch.

My master bath is not not a huge area, and it already had adequate lighting, so getting a fan/light combo was not a big draw for me.

I think you'll be very happy with a Panasonic...on the model I bought you *can* hear the fan but it's not an obtrusive or annoying sound, and it's never bothered me.

fancyxx - I don't know if you were asking me earlier or not (right after my comment), but I'll answer anyway. I remodeled the existing bathroom, so I simply replaced the ceiling light and bathroom fan. My old fan was making a lot of racket but not accomplishing a thing. It's not a can but it sits very flush, and it's the same color as the ceiling. The ceiling light is just a couple of feet away and it's pretty enough that you don't even see the fan.

Thank you! So we had an electrician coming to wire the bathroom but we never decided on what we wanna do. He wired the bathroom to have a fan/light combo however I’m going to have him come back and add a separate light. Thank you all for your feedback.
