The thing is you don't have a lot of root room in a pot for a long term healthy shrub. Is this something that is a relatively short lived situation (a few years with refresh expected eventually)? Potted is a different environment than in the ground. Also are you very close to the ocean? Sunset 23 is a different situation than Sunset 24, not as forgiving. Oceanfront you must consider salt tolerance.

I always lean towards what is going to be healthy and long term, because--better performance!

I've just seen Portulacaria afra used as a vertical screen in a trough. It was very effective and this of course is an extremely tough plant. There's always 'Sticks on Fire', Euphorbia tirucalii but of course you must consider the irritating sap of a Euphorbia if it is a well-trafficked area or there are little people about.

Leucandendron galpinii does well in a pot for several years coastal, though it is airy and happiest very close to the coast, where the fog belt drifts over in late afternoon and lingers through the morning for some of summer.

My go-to plants for narrow screening, 'Green Tower' boxwood, Callistemon 'Slim', Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Tasman Ruffles', 'Marjorie Channon' or 'Wrinkled Blue' , are all happiest in the ground. Plain old tough boring common Ligustrum japonicum trained vertically would manage for a while.

@hoovb ... thank you for the suggestions. I will check them out. Yes, I live very close , a few blocks, from the ocean,. Temps rarely exceed 70’s, yes we get fog drifting in in the afternoon, seems like more from May on .... right now sunny all days, no fog at all. I have no problem with replacing them every few years.
