We just painted our walls SW Anew Gray - now I have this huge space to fill by the entryway! Im thinking of some console table, or maybe even a storage bench? And a large mirror or art on top? Any ideas??

Will you post a pic of what is opposite of the wall?

Thanks for the suggestion! Do you think I should stick to the wooden look? I like that first one..

d_gw, yes I will post shortly! Its a large open room that we just had painted so its sort of in shambles right now lol

Without knowing what the rest of your home looks like, I'd be hard-pressed to say. The top photo is modern/transitional; the bottom photo traditional. Pick a look that works with the rest of your furnishings.

I am starting from scratch so I dont have too much furnishings to work off of right now. This is a photo from a little further back.

You do have a blank slate! Can you share some photos of spaces that you like?

One thing I would think about it is finding patterns, rugs or accessories that have brown and gray together. Both colors are neutral but the eye needs some help blending them together. Then pick an accent color. Orange and turquoise both look nice with gray and brown.

If this is a larger than normal entryway, I will share photos of some of my favorite entryways I have found here on Houzz:

What sort of accessories do you think I should look at that would have brown and gray together? Maybe a large rug?

Bev, those are beautiful, thank you!

If you can't find brown and gray, I would look for cream and gray since there are a lot of options in those colors. You are very welcome! Yes to a big rug, which will make the space more spectacular!

Do you have a decorating style that you like - traditional, contemporary, modern, transitional?

The advice above to get a big rug is perfect. Here is a helpful diagram.

When rug shopping online or in stores, if possible, bring home the smallest available of the style you like to check it out in your space. If you don't like it, the smaller version is much easier to drag to the post office or back to the store.

    I think I'm more transitional.

Thanks for that tip! Do you think I should look for a rug thats more to the brown side, or more to the gray? I do have a gray sofa there currently - and when we do replace, I imagine we will stick with the gray color.

It all depends on the pattern but if you prefer gray, I would use that as your base color. Just don't ignore the warm brown floor color. You won't need a large amount of warm/brown/ tan/cream but you will need some things with a little warmth to help tie everything together.

What do you think of this rug? Its officially a dark gray, but it has some black in it. Is that off?

The sofa is a dark gray, and that arm chair is a rich brown. The window treatments are also being replaced - I'm not sure yet what color, but I think I'm going to roller shades. Dont want blinds anymore.

I would like to see a rug with some warmer accents, especially since it will help tie the gray and brown furniture together.

Have you considered curtain panels? They are a nice way to add texture to a space and can help make the windows look more finished.

Would you have an example of what you mean?

I would love to do curtains but I have a few young ones at home and I fear they will get pulled on and ruined within a short amount of time.

I am browsing, everything I am seeing is heavily patterned or expensive. This one is not too expensive, it is from Pottery Barn. I will keep looking.

    Thank you so much!

What you picked above is really close, it just doesn't have any warmth in it. Your sofa looks blue/gray to me in the photo, does it look blue in person?

    No, it is quite gray

Your poor blinds :) Definitely get some shades.

Have a look at esalerugs under the transitional section. I have several polypropylene rugs from them that are reasonably priced and can be hosed off outside or spot-cleaned. If you have curtain panels that have long rods so that the window is not obstructed I see no reason you can't have them, even with children. There won't be any reason for them to touch them, but do get curtains that are washable. Your rooms will look cold and boring if you have nothing but gray and brown in them, and children especially need the stimulus of color in their environment. Pick a (large) rug that has brick red in it and repeat that color with pillows, art, etc. You can also include a soft yellow.

    Lol i know!

Ingrid you think I should tie in brick red? I was envisioning a brighter color like the yellow or turquise..

Do you have an example you can show me?

I always have liked this rug from esale for mixing warm and cool with bright accent colors. I was trying to stay away from patterns in my original rug post because the first rug you posted was more solid. I love patterns though.

Hmm.. I don't especially love it

pchavimangel,,,,,why don't you look over here for rugs and post what you are attracted to.

    https://www.houzz.com/shop-houzz/rug-sale?utm_source=Houzz&utm_campaign=u7712&utm_medium=email&utm_content=himg&newsletterId=7712

for the entryway,,,I'd do a large mirror/console, bench/art or console and large art.

and please do another entry light, along w/some sort of nicer blinds.

Last try for tonight, I need to stop procrastinating :)

this paint scheme would work great w/your floors. at least do the door a dark navy or black.

you could do a rug like this one or the hide one ^

Beth those are some great ideas. I love that purple bench with the two photos on top. Do you know how large those photos are?

I am going to change that light too :)

What type of blinds are those? Do you think I should stick with white there or maybe go for a contrasting color?

D_gw that's a cool rug! Do you have the link? Is that blue or gray?

    Thanks everyone for your help!!

Hi, it is from esale. Rug link

It looks like it is cream with faint grey accents, brownish dots and the blue design. So it blends your grey and your brown and it gives you some blue for an accent color.

How bad is this one? It doesnt have that accent design in it ..

I cant seem to find one I love that has that added color

Why don't you try posting photos of rugs that you do love and we can try to figure out how work them into the space.

It is hard to get grey and brown to work together. A rug is usually an easy way to unify everything in the room. But, if you don't care for for rugs with colorful patterns it makes things more difficult. But not impossible :)

That rug could work. It has an accent color and your main colors. You "should" be able to find that style with a reasonable price and your colors. I'm not sure why it is so difficult.

I saw this one on esale. I notice your old rug is geometric, I'm not sure if you like the style or are ready for a change. This is $169 for a 7x10. Rug link

pchav,,if I had to guess on the size of those pictures, I'd say in the 2'x4' neighborhood,,,give or take.

try Blinds.com for all sorts of different shade options. they will send you free samples too. I think you could do white or any accent color. I'd keep on the warmer tone side because of your flooring (which I really like. think about getting it refinished one day in a walnut shade).

the blinds pictured are a top=down option roman blind. these are cellulars (top down option)

and these are a Silhouette or Pirouette type blind

    .

a woven wood blind would also look nice. lots of options

Bev, thank you! The woven wood blind does sound like a cool idea. Do you think it would make the room look too warm/heavy?

i like woven woods. they have hundreds of types/colors you could do

this is mine, i've had for over 10 years (from blinds.com! it's a Bali)

    They really are beautiful!

pchav,,,blinds.com is owned by hOme depot, so you can go there to look at their sample books for a better idea. they also have the budget blinds if you need a cheaper version. if you call them, they have the best customer service and will be glad to help you. plus, they stand by their products. I've had to replacements sent to me without question. (sounds like I work for them but I really don't. I've ordered 10 blinds from them over the years and have nothing but positive reviews for them)

and they're have 30% their own brand today!

Beth, where would I find those entry lights that you posted above?

there were no links with them. I don't know. google flush mount lights' and see what pops up.

    you can also try Lampsplus.
