I recently checked several of my Asian persimmons growing in zone 7A. My Saijo, Sheng,Honan Red, Miss Kim, and Smiths Best all look OK. Last year I had scattered Dieback and low productivity; This year looks better. Sometimes it's obvious why this happens like a very cold winter and other times it's some combination of different factors that defies any obvious understanding.

Just south of you near Richmond my Asian Persimmon (square shaped non-astringent type) looks a-ok. Of all my fruit trees it is alway last one (like the pomegranate) to show any signs of life in Spring. Right now it is just putting out a hint of green on the limb and bud tips.

It got pretty cold here too and I think both of my figs are shot back down to their roots....again.

Vgkg: figs are productive maybe only 2 out of five years up here. Just a tad too cold and they die back.

I wanted to try Persimmons, so I got a couple Jiro trees last year and planted outside. I am in zone 6, and we had several days where temps went below zero, but the little trees are already budding up and happy. I read that Jiro trees are a bit hardier than Fuyu, and it seems to be true.

Dave, how's your persimmon doing? Has it popped back? Mine had a few small branches die back, but almost all branches are budding out. I was just pruning the dead branches earlier today. No full leaves out yet, but I suspect another few weeks and green will reign.
