i think chris once opined ... that the spots were cold damage.. individual cells breaking open ... creating the spot ...

you should be able to rule out insect sucking damage ... because it happens when its usually too cold for bugs to be an issue ... of course.. the further south you go ... the higher the odds it might be bugs ...

bottom line.. some cold night.. you dodged a bullet .. as it wasnt cold enough for severe damage ..

btw .. liberty also show some frost damage on the leaf edge ...

Kathy, where are you in NC? I'm just east of Asheville. They're calling for 30 degrees Monday night and I will have to pick and choose what to cover.

I'm glad Liberty didn't turn to mush like some did. I covered it but it still got a little damage.

I'm in the same boat..freezing temps tonight and tomorrow night..a few leaves are open but nothing's very big yet..and pips are everywhere..so of course we have freezing temperatures coming grrr..this one has frost damage even before tonight..

Stephanie, I’m in Summerfield, just north of Greensboro. Looks like we’ve dodged the hail bullet and the freeze bullet, too. Monday’s temps bottom out at 35 here for a short time. I spent the day working on the irrigation system. It’s pouring outside right now.

Good luck Nicholsworth! That one should look fine when it puts out new leaves, or at least good :) I'm happy with the ones that aren't mush this year, spots, frostbitten leaves or not. lol

They've changed the forecast to 28 for tonight. I don't know if I should cover or not - it's supposed to get up to 61 tomorrow and I leave for work at 6:15am so I'd have to uncover them while it's still freezing.

Kathy, I've never been to Summerfield, but have gone through Greensboro before, a long time ago. I remember the heat : ) I'm glad you dodged the bullet with the hail - hopefully the frosts/freezes are done for you this year!

stephanie..it's 30°..I woke up to this (view from kit window)..it's snowing lightly now..high today 38..and tonight 29..I didn't cover anything last night but tonight is colder so???..guess I'll hunt for boxes..

Rained hard yesterday. Finally got an hour of weeding in early on Saturday before the rains started. No hostas are coming up yet so that's a good thing this year. Just brave daffodils getting battered by rain and cold. Your hostas look so good but the gray guy should get inside before he freezes or gets drenched!

Brrrrr - nicholsworth. It gives me a chill just thinking about it. It will be summer soon enough and then I'll be complaining about the heat! lol I guess I'd better appreciate what I've got :)

Miles, I'm glad you got some weeding done and that your hostas are smart and still sleeping. Squeaky is safe and sound in his room today. He won't stay in 24/7 but he sure does appreciate the great indoors when it's cold and/or rainy.

So great to look at these! I've moved from Victoria to the Okanagan and had to leave most of my hostas behind, including Liberty and June. (Insert crying face). I haven't seen anything happening with the ones I did bring and am keeping my fingers crossed! Love the cat tail bonus haha. Oh, I guess I'd better change that 9a!

in my yard today..the Undulatas are my biggest hostas..a mix of Clausas, heucheras and a hellebore that popped up in the rocks..I saw translucent spots on some hosta leaves..I haven't covered anything..I have nothing too big or too special so I skipped it..I'm sad thinking of so many pips out there in the cold..4 more nights with low temps..Tues&Wed low 30s..Thur&Fri high 20s..

Of mine, the one that is farthest along is First Frost. It's new to me just planted last season.

popmama..I looked for my First Frosts..nothing yet..I'll be upset if they don't show up..have several (7?) and I like them..

Most of mine got damaged monday night. I feed at the barn my horse is at and when I got there one of the oldest was down outside and had been for a while. We had to call the vet out and it was late when I got home and I didn't get anything covered.

Oh well, hopefully next year we won't have summer in February and then unseasonably cold in April.

Oh, and Cookie, the horse, is okay. Vet thinks she laid down and got stuck. She's 30 though, so I don't know how much longer we will have her. :(

Nicholsworth, is your weather set to change for warmer weather anytime soon? I hope when it does it stays so you don't get more damage. I love your wild little ones coming up in the pathway.

stephanie..I sure hope so!..I was talking to my neighbor yesterday and we think this is the longest winter we've seen..it's fun when plants come up as a surprise!..too bad they're never in a good spot lol..glad your horse is better..

Sorry to hear about the damage from Monday.

It stayed just above freezing here so we got lucky. I'm hoping Thursday will be the last night in the 30s until fall for us. Last year it was super warm in February, everything woke up, and then we had a week in the mid 20s in mid-March that wreaked havoc.

This year I only have 2 plants with significant damage and a few more with minor frost damage. Most of mine look good for a change this spring.

Last night I tried to tent a towel over Montana Aureo, but when I took it off this morning, it had touched some of the leaves and frostbit them. That poor hosta gets nailed every single year... Most everyone else is in various states of pipping and should be tightly furled enough to handle the cold. As I was doing my daily walk around yesterday after work, it started snowing on me. Grrrrr. I have some leafed out hostas in pots that I am moving in and out of the house every day, and can't wait to be done with this nonsense. If it would just stay in upper 30's at night, I would be happy, but at least 2-3 more nights in low 30's will ensure that M.A. is mush by the time it warms up, if ever.

Whitewater, I'm glad yours will be looking good this year. I'll live vicariously through other members this year :)

threedogsmom, my Montana Aureo is going on it's 2nd year and it's the second time it's gotten bitten by frost. I think it's chances of reaching superstar status are slim to none. lol I see so many pretty ones posted here that I just had to have one but I think from now on I'm going to try to find "late emerging" ones to buy. Although Stained Glass is on that list and it was one of the first and was absolutely liquified by a freeze.

I hope your weather evens out soon too. I think everyone this year is ready for springtime!

Stained Glass always comes up early for me, too. I have 2 of them and one was undamaged this year while the other was one of the two hostas I have that got frozen to mush. It's re-emerging now but looks pathetic compared to the other one across the yard.

I think Stained Glass is on the late emerging list by accident. It’s one of the first up in my yard and all the other Guacamole sports and fragrants are listed as early to emerge.

Sorry to hear that everyone is having so many problems with the temperatures. It snowed here yesterday and the winds are cold and biting. My hostas are still below ground but the daylilies are bravely sending up more and more shoots each day. Most of them are 4-6 inches above ground but I think that the cold doesn't hit them as hard as it does the hostas with their leaves that are more susceptible to frost.

Some, well most, of the companion plants I have are unscathed (so far) by the frost. I guess they're just tougher, or luckier. ;)

the free Royal Standards that I overwintered buried in compost are coming up..I moved a little compost to take this pic..and then put it back..34° tonight and 28° tomorrow night..my First Frosts have pips..some cute wildflowers by my viburnum..

It was 82F yesterday while I was planting the new hostas I got from Green Hill Farm and we have a frost warning tonight! I put all the boxes away yesterday! Seems like the forecast for the lows of the rest of the week look good, then they lower the forecast for tonight! I’d really like to bring the avocado tree out, otherwise known as reclaiming ten square feet of the bedroom.

It seems you all have Finnish spring, snow and freeze. I'm sorry, I wish warmer weather for all. My snow is melting fast and I'm happy. Might even have one tiny pip in green house ;)

I have tulips, jipii.

But I'm sure, I will get my share of late snow and freeze maybe in May. Next ten days are 9-15 celsius and no freeze in nights. Hostas are still in deep sleep.

Kathy..just checked some old posts..I noticed my first pip Feb 20..funny but it's still not much different..very slow to leaf out has been a good thing..you posted a pic of Blue Sliver with leaves on Feb 24..so almost 2 MONTHS of worry about new hostas..ridiculous..and we're not finished..we'll be freezing tonight just like you..and it was 70° yesterday..

Saija..what a fun picture!..gorgeous leaves..so tonight it's warmer in Finland than in North Carolina and Indiana..that's crazy..the weatherman just said we're 15 degrees below average..I feel cheated out of spring..

Nicolsworth, love your dogtooth violets--I have them too such a wonderful sign of spring. Mine are not blooming yet but I get to enjoy your pictures.
