I'm not sure, but it looks like the wall is covered in a beautiful black-to-grey stone. My preference would be to paint the door a matching color. It looks like the rest of the house is painted a dark grey, and I'd continue that grey or little lighter to all the lattice, side rails, and decking - a real weathered wood look. Any thing you add after that will really pop: planters, window boxes, rugs, table & chairs, or benches & cushions. I'm wondering where you are located and if this is the front or back of the house.

A barn red would pop and blend well.

I appreciate the ideas. I think painting the lattice is a good idea. I also like both colours on the door. How did you place the colour on the door? Both are interesting. What is the second colour you have placed the...barn red for one and the second? Wonder if you can give an opinion for the trim inside the cottage that I have placed on site. Lots of great ideas. You might also think about staining the lattice a deeper color, but raisin may be too dark with the house. You might try brightening the door up with a soft yellow, like Ben Moore's Hawthorne Yellow. See below; it;s very soft and looks stunning with rich deep grey:

I would paint the door blue and go with a nautical theme....Thinking lake cottage here...(?)

Door - Dark Gray or Black, lattice - color to match the door - would be practical too but would also unify the look and make it less busy :)

I would paint the door the same color sat the fascia board and eaves. This door placement is asymmetrical. A solid or near solid back drop for planters or furniture would look great from the yard if you spend much time looking at it from that angle.

I think white front doors look unfinished. And it's not the right feel for a cottage/lake house.
Either go a medium grey or a burst of colour. I love the apple green or a teal/bright aqua.

Dark green, like the trim

Would this be a more colourful consideration. Would it look good with the stone. It is hard to see the actual colour of the stone on the computer.

deep dark blue, I did it to mine, looks awesome. not navy, look at dark royal blues, glossy. my inspiration came from the first pic, the second is my results. Im going to paint the trim around the window to match the bronzey brown of my garage doors. my door is actually a bit darker, i lightened it so it would show up better.

My first thought is orange, but a more subtle orange that has some grey/brown in it.

tuff50, actually I am not very good at colors ... when I had posted the 2 colors that you mentioned you like, I kind of cheated. I am using photoshop to put color on the door. With the help of photoshop, I was able to copy the color of the facade of your cottage and match it with a benjamin moore color which they suggest complimentary colors. To be honest, since I not good at color, it would be hard for me to suggest colors for the trim. However, if houzzers suggest ideas, I may be able to show you what it would like using photoshop.

Also, if you would like to see colors that have already been suggested, let me know which ones and I will do a photoshop for you.

tuff50, You were asking about the 2 colors I did a photoshop. The first one is from Benjamin Moore BM 1202 - baked terra cotta, the second one is BM hc-118 - sherwood green. I also did a photshop of a turqoise because I think it is a graet suggestion and thought you might like to see it. It is BM 2056-30 surf blue.

This is the same as the turquoise above but less saturated. I like it better.

I love the charcoal brick. I also love the coloured door look - I dont think you can go wrong with any bright colour, you could paint the singles or even add shutters to the windows. Its quick, inexpensive and tails a couple of nails and nail gun :)

I agree with beccarak, any color would work but I would not have it too too bright. IMO, a little tone down would look better with all the nature around the cottage.

ILike the reds for color, then add a red umbrella and some red geraniums in planters.....cute!

To my eye, the dark gray brick/stone is extremely "earthy" and dictates earthy colors for the rest of the home. I suggest the lattice be washed (versus painted) with a gray, the trim painted a caramel, and the door painted a deep green, perhaps a rust. Since this is contrary to what EVERYONE else has suggested, I'd love to hear others' thoughts.

Nancy Reese I think your red door is lovely. Unfortunately the chocolate brown soffit cannot be painted or changed. Definitely not my choice but the installer took it upon himself to match the older garage.

I would do same color as the clapboards or maybe one shade lighter if you want a harmonious look. Other option would be to make it stand out with a warm, rich red or orange color. Think natural warmth like autumn leaves.

The color of your front door is really important! I did an article for This Old House on this very topic: http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/photos/0,,20567862,00.html The first thing I would do is decide what kind of statement you want to make with your front door. Take a look at the article for several suggestions! It is said that the front door makes a statement about the person that lives inside!
I would also suggest downloading the Color 911 app. You can play with many colors and look at the color themes to see if there is a theme with (house) colors similar to yours, and see what accent colors go along with it! Its easy and fun to use. The Color911 app, I highly recommend it!

Is this the back or front of the house? You need something to bring the whole look together. The door sort of looks like it is tacked on one side instead of being part of the design...out of balance. What about framing out the windows with a trim that brings the top of the window up to the door level and putting window level planters for flowers across the deck under the windows for balance? Paint to match whatever color you choose for door and lattice.

The rest of the house needs to look more "attached" than it does. Because of the asymmetry of the front door, it somehow doesn't pull together. The small windows on the rest of the house could be trimmed out with molding, vertical lattice planters or something to draw the house together. Is that stone or gray brick on the front of the house? Is it possible to match the color on the rest of the house? Or paint the rest of the house a contrasting color so the middle section stands out. The sofits can also be painted whatever color you choose for the door and window trim. Some of the major paint companies have interactive sites where you can upload a photo and play with colors.

The deck could also be given a coat of dark gray Cuprinol to keep it from "floating" in front of the house. With White lattice and planter boxes, it would come together more. Basically this is not an expensive makeover. Some paint, trim and plants will work wonders.

Truthfully....paint it your favorite color...it's paint. If you hate it you can repaint it....go wild.

A french ochre / yellow.

I think the blues are cold and uninviting, need a welcoming warm colour.

Lime, Orange or Bright lake blue are my favorites, but yellows are wonderful with the grey as well. The orange door pictures make me swoon they are so wonderful. You will adore it with a fun wonderful color.
