I wonder if it is Japanese knotweed, an awful invasive that is difficult to eradicate. Do an image search for Japanese knotweed sprouts or Fallopia japonica sprout to compare. IME they often start with that pinkish color and asparagus look, but with joints.

Now that you say that, it does look like it could be Japanese Knotweed. That is indeed, awful stuff. This is planted along a fence in what I think is a perennial bed. It looks cared for and maintained. I showed the pictures to some friends at a gathering I was at tonight and most everyone said that it was asparagus. One friend said it looks like Bamboo. I guess it could be some type of ornamental, clumping bamboo. Tomorrow I will be back in the same location and will see if there is someone who would know what it is. I'll let you know what I find out.
