i have a dog with a very strong prey drive. He goes crazy when he sees ground squirrels, but does not react at all to birds. A dog trainer might be able to help you. If unsure of their behavior, you’re right, best not to get chickens.

I got my first Dandie Dinmont because she wouldn't stop killing just about any critter she came across, chickens included. Since her owners weren't willing to sell their farm for her, I got her. Best day of my life. High prey drive towards squirrels but, oddly, smaller birds didn't trigger her. She hunted and harassed squirrels until the week before she died.

The Dandie I have now - I kid you not - came with a rooster. The breeder told me the rooster was Poppie's best friend. I thought it was a joke until I saw it with my own two eyes. She didn't even notice squirrels for the first six months but that has changed.

i'm sure they can be trained out of that, but first i think the 3 of you need to learn the difference between a squirrel and a chicken. lol
