Thanks for the feedback. So what kind of soil should I use and when I repot should I bury it up to where the leaves start? Your suggestions welcome.

half of it needs to be organic - peat and coir based, other half needs be coarse sand, perlite, pummice if you can get a hold of it cheaply.

It could be mix as milevskistefan suggested, or even gritty mix - mostly (if not all) inorganic. Your choice according to what ingredients you can get easily. Not many ppl advice using peaty soil; if you do use one with good amount of it, make sure mix is not water retaining, or completely dries up since peat will either keep it too wet for too long or became hydrophobic...neither is good for succulents.

It is better not to bury stem deep, but rather behead etiolated succulent. Before you do so, make sure you can provide better light, otherwise it will continue growing tall and 'loose'. HERE IS THREAD with lots of directions and photos about beheading different succulents.

I grow a lot of echeverias, and as long the mix is at least 40% mineral, the plant should be both well fed, and pest free. Most dutch wholesale soils however, become hydrophobic over time. Thus the plant needs a cleanup.
