Wall Art Decorations

Just finished hanging the canvas art above our sectional!
what do you think? I think we should have move it up a bit higher! it is about 6" from back of the sectional (but the back cushions appeared a bit higher). Maybe move it up another 4 inches?
Also, what should we do with the area to the left of the canvas? We are thinking maybe a few black&white family pictures (with larger gallery frames).
Thank you in advance for your inputs.

I'd raise it a bit, but you have that air vent you need to consider.

The print is nice, but the frame is throwing me off. It feels too modern compared to the rest of the room. Consider swapping out the chrome frame for something more transitional.

Yes, I'd raise the art a bit -- I think you are okay with keeping it below the air vent. To the left I would put another form of art -- a simple square shape, wood fretwork, perhaps, or a metal piece, but probably in white. Pair it with a lamp and use just one of your photographs there.

I know the area is small, and the sectional is large, but can you center the sofa on the wall? Just remove what looks like a fake plant (or if it's real, move it over).

Also, the room would be airier without the accent wall, which closes in the space. Can we see the window wall? Some drapes would add texture and interest to the room and echo the painting, especially if you repaint the wall.

Oh yes, I did want to suggest you move the sectional (and art) over the left a bit. That's not an accent wall, is it? It looks like an opening of some sort to me. And you may notice I removed the plant that looks none too healthy.

I love the art!! Lovely bold piece! Do raise it, ever so slightly.

I think the plant behind the sectional should be relocated. It's drawing attention to the far corner of the furniture and room.

In the space to the left of the art; shift the plant to the right, 'in' to the room, and get a pedestal of sorts to raise it another foot or so. Alternatively switch it for a taller plant. It seems an odd place for more art, particularly multiple family portraits. Off balance with the rest.

    Also, some other observations:

I'd recommend changing the cushions, maybe to brown. It detracts from the art. Accent colours shouldn't be overdone? You can have more blue, but rather not that close to the art.

Now or later, consider repainting the wall to something a shade or two darker, for a bit more contrast with the sectional and rug.

Can we see shots of the other side of the room, for a better idea of the space?

I am greatly appreciate all the inputs! I will definitely move the artwork a bit higher. We just moved in a few months so it will take us a bit to settle down! The main issue is our styles (I am more of a traditional vs the Mrs. is more modern) so we are trying to compromise.
I will take more pictures of the room later tonight! The room is actually larger than it looks so I don't think the sectional is out of proportion.
The TV is on the opposite wall and it is off the corner so we currently have the sectional there but will definitely consider move it to the left if that make sense.
Thanks again for all the feedback and looking forward to all the great help to make our home even nicer.

What you really need on that end of the sofa is a real end table and a lamp.

a custom wall mural on glass of the family in b/w might be really cool

This is all you need here: a lamp for a bit of height.

I find the reflective quality of the frame does not enhance the art, so I switched it out for a plain black one. If that's a canvas, I'd let it go frameless.

Thanks again for more great feedbacks! Yes, we are trying to work with most of the stuffs from our previous place.
Here is the view from the front entrance. We painted the big wall dark brown as accent and will put up fully length curtains shortly.
here is the opposite wall. We are looking to replace the media console as well.
The room is approximately 20ft by 18ft but the steps are something we do not like very much
  • 8 years ago

I would definitely raise it a good 8 inches or so. It looks great tho

I see I was dof yesterday, not seeing the accent wall because I was working on the other pic. My apologies. I was getting tired, I think. That's my excuse. (Dof = South African for "not too bright".)

Hi.... I can get the bright blue/ brown vibe, but not with the delicate and soft rug.... would a round coffee table be better?....

    I like this finish... like the lighter paint. Would this work somewhere? 31.5" H x 36" W x 15.25" D

For $150 a rayon/poly rug that might blend with carpeting, and be nearer the bright blue....it might be a little much look.

Rina- no worries! it was my fault for not having the complete pictures.
Everdebz- thank you for the suggestions.
We will definitely get a real end table but know coffee table as our dear daughter is 8 months old and we want her to have a bit more space to move around when she starts walking.
we are also considering move the sectional to the left and add a console table to the right of it.
thank you everyone for the suggestions. looking forward to more great ideas.

I would move the sofa to the opposite side and put the console and TV in the wall where you have the big paint. I cannot believe how and where you have the console table now

Dyliane- we thought about putting the sectional there as well. However, that wall is too short (only about 60") plus our front entrance is right there and we want to have a better flow. There steps of the sunken living room is very problematic for any nice layout. We will probably raise the floor up when we are ready to replace the ugly carpet.
The console table would be behind the the right of the sectional (placing perpendicular to the long wall).

put the sofa in front of the steps and leave clearance to pass in the back, sorry but it's ridiculous where and HOW the console table is. Can you think how dangerous is it with a small child?

dyliane - sorry I misunderstood your comment! yes, we realized that and in the process of getting a console that fit in that space. Again, we are trying to get used of the things that we already have from our previous space. No need to be rude!

I'm not rude, while others are speaking of trivial things, I warn you about an imminent and real danger. Move the console table now

I would put the sectional in front of the window, put the TV where the art is and the art where the TV is now. The chaise can probably go under the art, angled toward the opposite corner.

To find a TV console for that space, it will either have to be extremely narrow to go end to end on that wall, or it will be too short to look good under the TV.

I also replaced your entry mirror with one more suited for the space. This is a diy project from Lowe's:

Groveraxle - thank you for the suggestions! We will try to lay that out and see how everything will fit.
Yes, it is very challenging to find a media console to fit into that space. We also have full size Audio/Video Equipments so it even harder to get anything to fit there!
I like you mark up of the DIY project! will definitely look into it.
Nice touch with the dog! must not let my son see it
  • 8 years ago
Dyliane - thank you for pointing that out! of course safety is our number one concern. I have the blocks are secured to the console and also the console is secured to the wall with 2 metal brackets!

Love the new layout ideas with sofa under the window and swapping TV and art walls. To really increase airiness and flow, paint the accent wall the same as the other walls. Then get curtains to add more color and pattern there. With the painting on the other side, you can have more pattern in the curtains yet still harmonize with the art.

Love the sectional. Where did you pick that up at, please ?

Yes, very interesting idea! We will keep that in mind when we ready to redo the living room. We figured the current layout works pretty good for what we already have. Plus we want to see the nice backyard from the seating area and also wanted the large TV to be out of the way in the corner wall.
Anyhow, we took most of the advice and the result isn't so bad. The curtains definitely finished up the large wall nicely (just have to figure out what to do with the slider door in the kiddos play area.
The plan is doing really well in that corner so hopefully it will grow a bit taller and fill in the space.

jtascam - I believe we got the sectional from Pottery Barn. it is called the Cameron Square Arm!

You said ugly rug - my one rug seemed to have a bit of art's blue in the center - you might like a rug that adds it.

Looking good. The plant is great -- very bold. And what a garden view you have!

Thank you Rina! The view was one of the main reason we have the seating area arranged this way.
