Mine is somewhat blacker but it looks like FB. If the bark on the stem near the dead leafs is slightly shriveled and darker than the surrounding bark down the stem then that's a FB indicator too. It looks burnt.

Yeah that's fire blight ... just now read about Tennosui, and it is supposedly highly resistant ... but apparently not immune. I tried asian pears ... and they all got it almost instantly ... so I yanked em' all. The leaf stem shaped like a shepherd's crook is another indicator.

Fire blight is a bacteria that is weather induced. It has nothing to do with the soil and an occurrence of fire blight does not preclude planting another tree in the same spot. FWIW, I have yet to encounter any Asian pear that is not susceptible to fire blight.

Maybe it was due to H. Harvey last year.

If it had too much water it could have damaged the roots and you could just now be seeing the results. I had a 5 year old Kiefer pear go under water, but it it doing fine.

If it is FB, the tree may grow out of if. Many of the disease resistant varieties get FB but it stops after about a foot or so. I have had 3 different pear trees planted from pots that got FB, but continued to grow.

FB is soil related in that with high nitrogen, the plant has high vigor and that is when FB attacks, on new vigorously growing branches. Go easy on the nitrogen, especially in the spring.
