Handkerchief quilt

I was just at a family gathering and my SIL brought in a quilt to show us that she had made. She had just picked it up from the quilters. It used antique handkerchiefs that she had collected. I didn't get a photo, but it was similar to this one. quilt

She had a pure white background and the quilting was different in each hanky. It was beautiful. I had never seen one before.

I'm going to pass the word around to friends and start collecting enough for a quilt.

Theresa, I'm hoping to get them all approximately the same size. I don't have the creative ability to come up with something if the sizes vary too much.

Greenshoekitty, thanks for the suggestion. I looked and found a couple I am going to watch. But most are white, or appear to be too small. I'm need to check the local antique/resale stores to find out what they run before I buy on Ebay.

On eBay you can often get batch’s of hankies for very little.

Several years ago, someone "gifted" me with all of his mother's sewing room stuff. That crab fabric and fish fabric was part of it, he also included a collection of hankies. I always thought I would do a quilt with them. Still thinking!. Mine are all different sizes so hard to come up with a plan.

If what I sent you is what you need, photograph and measure them and post them. When I picked those up, I was looking for embroidered hankies. Those were just thrown in. I'll never get to the embroidered hankies, so if anyone wants to start collecting those for a quilt, I'll pass them along.

I have a lot more ideas for quilts than I have time and energy. Now, I've decided I want to make a doily quilt. So far, I have not started collecting small doilies. I may be like my cousin. When she retired a couple of years ago, she had collected the fabric, patterns and backing to make 79 quilts. Now, she wants to spend time with her grandkids and do genealogy. So, she going to donate most of her fabric to Project Linus.

At the rate I get quilting done, I have enough fabric for my lifetime.

Will do, bkay.

79 quilts!!! Oh my goodness. The doily quilt is beautiful, but it would kill me to cut them in half. I guess if both halves are used, it would less traumatic for me.

Bkay, I've received the handkerchiefs and they are very pretty and exactly what I was looking for. I'll get a pic posted, I've been down with a terrible cold. Thank you!

Here's the pic. They measure from 11" to 12.5". Aren't they pretty?

Even with assistance, it will probably take a while to get enough for a quilt.

edit: I take that back. There are tons of them on ebay. Some are pretty cheap, too.
