Best Appliances

My husband and I are building our home in a few months. What is the opinion of Bertazzoni vs Viking vs Thermador vs Jennair. I’d love all the opinions and advice I can get.

We are wanting the 48” with whichever we go with.

Our fear with Bertazzoni is maintenance.

Thanks is advance!

If you haven't already, give the Appliances and Kitchen forums a look. Post there and also search the archives.

    You're wanting a 48" what? Fridge? Stove?

    I’m wanting the 48” stove.

I thought this was the appliance forum. Okay thanks!

I am not trying to be a PITA here, but on my computer screen there are two tabs above the title of the OP's request: Building a Home & Appliances. I don't know why we don't all see the same things here. I have heard other posters talk about issues/problems I didn't see on my screen.

As for the OP's question. I am an opinionated person (but a wee short on time, so I will be quick and come back later to expand if need be.)

Bertazzoni ranges have many fans here, one of whom is a caterer, so I figure she really knows what she is talking about. Some people will tell you Bertas are underpowered. I don't think that is a real problem. Unless you want truly pro style fire power, then I am pretty sure regular burners are fine. If you want a real pro type range, then you need a Bluestar.

Bluestar, if you have not heard of them, is an American company that makes ranges like tanks. They are the heirs to the old commercial Garland brand (Julia Child's range.) Their ranges are free from fancy electronics and made simply and well. A few years ago there were some issues that needed to be worked out with respect to door and ignitors; those appear to be fixed. There are many, many positive reviews. If you are interested in this brand start a new thread for Bluestar owners and I am sure you will get some great feedback.

Thermador gets good reviews. You can get great package deals on them and while people will poo-poo buying all your appliances from one manufacturer, I think Thermador, which is a Siemens company, is a safe bet. Their dishwashers and refrigerators are basically the same as Bosch/Gaggenau minus the stainless interior for the Gagg refridgerator.

JennAir is a rebadged Kitchen Aid, which people find adequate. Their refrigerators are especially well loved here.

If I were looking to stock my kitchen with the best appliances, I would get a Bluestar range (it's all gas which does not bother me one bit and I am getting this range for our ski house in fact.)

My dw and refrigerator would be a Miele or a Bosch depending on budget, though KA would be in the running for refrigerator.

Oh about Viking- they are not worth discussing. Put bluntly they are a troubled company turning out a poor product with not much support should something go wrong, and something will go wrong. Avoid Viking at all costs. You see Viking on TV because they give their stuff away for the exposure and will replace broken items at the drop of a hat since it's just advertising to them. In the distant past Viking may have been fine.

I hope this helps a bit. Bertas are gorgeous and I would investigate them further if I were you. They seem like a good value to me and are so good looking :-)

I am not trying to make a federal case out of this, but here is a screen shot of what this post looks like for me. If I go to the Appliance forum, I find this post there as well.

If I start a post, I am prompted to choose several categories to put my post under.

ETA I accidentally wrote Kitchen forum instead of Appliance- and I got to the post via Appliance forum too.

Besides the subject of in which forums new posts are posted (and I have only one tab above, "Building a Home"), there is tremendous value in the various forums' archives, though often the best way to search is via Google rather than GardenWeb's search function. So the best thing to do is to search both the Appliance forum and the Kitchen forum to see what others have posted previously and at great length about the various ranges.

We opted for a 48" Bluestar in great part because of the simplicity of construction, but then we live in a fairly remote rural area in Canada, and "maintenance" for us is quite different for us than for others who live in even vaguely urban areas, esp in the US. (For our granny/kid suite, I looked for a gas range without self-cleaning so that no-one would ever be tempted to use it, thus killing the range.)

    Huh.

On my MacBook Pro, I can't see/find Kayla's post anywhere on the Appliance forum, even if I do a search for her name. So there are likely others who aren't seeing the post on the Appliance forum either, esp if they aren't using their phones. Not sure about iPads. Like cp, I'm just trying to get Kayla's post in front of as many eyes as possible : ) .

I have two tabs above, similar to Rita and I am also on a MacBook Pro.

[I think if you come in through GW, posts only show in the forum first tagged. If you come in through Houzz, posts will display in all tagged discussion topics. If I want the GW display/format, I have to clear cookies/cache and then sign in from one of the non-Houzz GW forums (e.g. HD Convos or Hot Topics). If I have any cookies from the Houzz side before signing in I will get the Houzz format.]

We have a Bluestar. Of the brands listed in the OP we have a couple of friends who have Thermador and they like it.

Here is what the Appliance front page looks like to me. This is what I get even if I type in Gardenweb Appliances. Why can't we all see the same thing? Makes it a bit tough to have a conversation if we are all seeing something different.

Rita I think you probably are signed in from Houzz -- how does the web address display? When I am not signed in, going to gardenweb appliances comes in from the www.houzz.com domain (discussions) and displays as you show. When I make the effort to sign in from the GW side, Appliances comes up from the ths.gardenweb.com domain (forums) and does not display Kayla's thread.

During the transition(s) a number of GW users expressed dislike for the Houzz format. Maybe that is why the GW format is still available.

[ETA personally if I am signed in I prefer to browse from the GW side so I don't see duplicate posts in multiple forums.]

[ETA I think if one wanted to reach the largest number of folks, one would have to post separately in both forums/discussions (cross-post) rather than having a single thread which displays in both places on the Houzz side. But then there also are drawbacks to having two threads.]

Eureka, Oaktown, that's the rub! I am signed in through Houzz, though not on purpose. I know how lame this sounds and it pains me to admit it, but I get here via Google. I type in Gardenweb Appliances and the Houzz format pops up for me. When I followed your link, the old GW format displayed.

Thank you for clearing that up.
