To Expose Joists, Or Not To Expose Joists?

Hi - we have uncovered the joists and rafters in our home renovation project (mid-century modern house, 1963). As we looked up over the kitchen/sunroom area which we plan to connect, we realized that we could expose the beams and open the room up to roof height. We can do this for the entire length of the sunroom and part of the kitchen, which are in a straight line and connect. We'd put sky lights in the sunroom. The question is: should we do it? Will it change the house's character too much? In general, we're renovating in a modern and transitional style. Are there too many beams and will they be distracting to look at? What color should they be? Help! Must decide quickly.

If you like it go for it. Higher ceilings always give such a nice since of space and openness in a room.

As your rooms are not so high go for it. You can paint beams the same color as ceiling, so they would not be so distracted.

Since they appear to be thin, unevenly spaced, a little rough around the edges, and different colors, I would probably not expose them.

You will have issues with hiding wiring, lighting the room, insulation, ventilating the roof and you will lose the drywall which provides a layer of fire protection. I wouldn't do it.

edit to add--Plus more places for dust to accumulate and spiders to swing their webs where you have to knock them down.

Also adding a lot more cubic feet of space that has to be heated and cooled. Your current HVAC may well not be up to the task.
