I'd start with a good cleaning before making any decisions. I think you'll be surprised how much brighter the brick looks once the dirt and algae are gone. Then have the low spots lifted and re-leveled. If you still want a lighter look, consider a brick stain rather than paint - it looks much more natural and holds up better outdoors.

Yes. Lift the bricks, replace sunken sand, relay brick, invest in new edging. I would also apply some ant/bug killer granules before replacing the brick. When sweeping granite or polymeric sand in the 'grout' lines I would add more bug killing granules and reapply seasonally. You wil be amazed what a good powerwashing can do.

My recommendation is to use limestone screenings for leveling.

Will you handle leveling DIY? I had a paver patio for many years. When re-setting areas I notched a 2x4 the thickness of a brick on both edges to create a uniform level space to replace them. Sweep polymeric sand between joints.

I would not try to lighten it up but a good power wash every spring is a must . The corners need to be better supported with proper edging that can be done DIY if you are able bodied . If lighter get a great outdoor rug in a light color .

I would find a new edging while you are at it. It doesn't do the beautiful brick justice.

To each their own, I would want something that blended better.

One option for the edging would be bricks. I don’t have a photo right now showing our patio edging, but this is our front walkway where brick was also used for the edging. The patio is done the same. I think what you have is fine. Lots of ways to do it, as long as it’s what you like.

Your granite block edging is very traditonal in New England so I don't understand the problem either (from one who lives in New England!) I would just power wash the brick and level what's sinking, do some weeding and enjoy. It will look very pretty with an outdoor rug.

I love the herringbone pattern. i understand your desire to lighten the red of the brick but if you white washed it dirt would show more and it would wear off. Just use light furniture and planters and string lights.

Agree! A light rug will probably be a great addition. I power washed today! Will tackle the brick leveling in a few days

Definitely would recommend cleaning before making any decisions on attempting to change color. You can use chemicals to lighten the brick but, after cleaning, you might like the classic brick color more than you think.
