I agree with Kelly. Can you provide pic of the entire front of the house? If your home is fairly new, and not historic, you may want to remove the architectural details you have and replace with something more to your liking as Kelly has posted. (Love the Belmont Hill residence you posted, Kelly!) you could also replace the lighting fixtures as the ones there screams traditional and you said this is not your style.

I might try navy on the shutters. Then depending on how bold and arty you want to be your door could be navy, red, yellow, orange, coral.....ect. New light fixtures could also help to make the entrance more your style.

You might want to consider taking off all the half round pediments that are on the small windows as well.

Thank you all. Kelly, I completely agree with removing the colonial details which I detest! I adore the idea of a purple front door Judy G, but am nervous about it looking like "Barney's" house. The right shade is crucial. The lighting fixtures have to go as they are the cheap builder grade sort. Any suggestions on a replacement Handymam? Thank you all a ton!

This is a traditional house, with a traditional door, and needs the shutters to complete the look. You can't change the house into a different type of style by removing the shutters. Appreciate the house for what it is. I think an eggplant color would be beautiful and unique on your door, and match the rest of the house.

What colors are in your foyer and living room? I think continuity and flow from the exterior of the house to the interior is so important---what you see on the outside reflects what's within and there's nothing that clashes or is not aesthetic when you enter the house from the outside. I love red door and black shutters, but if your interior is apple green and egglant, it's not as pleasing when you come from the outside and step inside. Your beautiful new front door and sidelights should at least hint at what's insidel!!

From the foyer you see a great chocolate brown, red, and mustard with hints of black, wood floors and tons of light.

Oh, then I think a red door would be GORGEOUS with your color palette! My initial reaction when first seeing the photo of your house was to say RED door, black shutters. Now when I see your color palette for the interior, I think----RED door, black shutters!! I just can't see entering the house through a yellow, orange, coral, navy, apple green or purple door into a house decorated in brown, red, mustard, and black. Reds can also be difficult to get just the right shade. Maybe take the first or most prominent red you see upon entering the house to the paint store and have it color matched...AND---a red door means welcome, good luck, joy, happiness, and many other things in many cultures!! And now that I read this article about the meaning of red doors---I think I need to paint my own front door red!! Good luck!!

Another lovely and classic option would be black front door (especially because you don't want to have the bright red door paint compete with the beautiful leaded glass) and colorful (mustard?!) shutters!
