Not an expert on this but you either have a borer a cancer or your tree bark cracked on its own due to extreme temps. Mine cracked and eventually the borers went in and laid their eggs and ate the bark.

The goo is called gummosis and as mentioned can indicate more than one problem. Try your nearest USDA Cooperative Extension branch office for help with finding out what, exactly keeps happening - you will have to find out if it is bugs or if it is a blight in order to know what to do about it.
