Ever get those "first night" jitters?

Tonight is the first night my peppers spend outside... all alone.. The weather is warm and still.. good overnight temps and my peppers have been hardening off well in their containers..

But still, it's their first night out. No more moving pots, or careful sheltering since the forecast is good..

And every year.. I still get the first night jitters about leaving my peppers out for the first time every time..

And yay! All the peppers survived the night, lol. I knew they would, but still. We could have had a freak snowstorm, heheeh- or the midnight critter being tempted to chomp the plants. They are still going to stay on the porch for a few more days where they get a bit of a shade and wind break. The next couple days are supposed to be hot, sunny, and really windy. Round midweek we get some cloud cover and gentle showers with the nice temps and I'll move them out to the open sun of the slab :)

I dont worry nearly as much about the night as I do the day. I am always afraid I will sunburn them. My first year growing from seed, I did that and it wasn't pretty. Since then, I take care to get them out but with full shade for a few days before graduating them to full sun. Mine have been out for three or four days now and with temps at night forecast to stay above 40 for the next week or so, I am not going to bother to bring them in at night at all. Usually my cutoff is 50, but I am getting lazy in my old age.

In fact, I am half tempted to pot them up to their summer containers now even though the normal summer plant out date is still 2-3 weeks off.

I've been somewhat forced to pot a few large seedlings to they summer containers a week ago. They are pretty much hardened now, but nights can still dip fairly low, such as last night, only a few °C above freezing. I moved them to the unheated garage and threw on a blanket over them with an incandescent bulb for a bit of warmth. Actually, I hadn't noticed when I left them last night, but the bulb was touching one of the buckets and it melted a 1" hole. I guess I now have one of these air-pruning pots. :)

Yah, while it still says nothing below 40 for the next ten days, I am not going to pot up quite yet. I don't have the room or the inclination to be moving my plants back and forth in 5 gallon pails. If I can make it another week with a favorable 10 day outlook, then I will probably go ahead and pot them up.

Isgen, just glad something worse than a hole in the bucket didn't result.
