sectional couch or a couch and loveseat ?

We just bought this beautiful house with open floor plan. The good thing about open floor plan is we can place furniture as we desire however my husband and i can’t agree on what kind of couch could look good in this space. I want to keep the are open and buy two couch put them again each wall and area rug in between to create a open area. My Husband on the other hand wants a sectional couch which we could place against either wall but will block either room/bathroom, fireplace or the entry way. Please help !!

OK, Priya - I have done two layouts. Your main problem is maintaining "walkways" through your space. Plus the TV being in the far corner is challenging for sure. These are two approaches for your review. We like to keep 3' passing/walkways through spaces, about 18" from front of sofa edge to a coffee table and at least 2' between chairs and other furniture such as sofas.

The first layout puts the TV on a console along the long wall. this provides easy walk space and a chaise or bench in front of the fireplace provides additional seating to watch TV or sit by a fire. I couldn't read the tiny print too well on your drawing, but did the best I could to scale it to the main seating area. The Scale is 1/4"=1' or each little square is equal to one square foot. I put a sofa table behind the 84" x 44" comfy sofa and one or two lamps could sit on that sofa table. I didn't have a good idea of where that window is along that wall but it looks on the drawing like it is roughly across from the long wall. The coffee table is 44 x 22 which allows walking space from sofa around the space.

You must be new here. Most of the time this comes up advice is a couch and 2 chairs. Loveseats are a waste since usually only 1 person will sit on them.

You have a very challenging space. Will you have TV? If so, where will it be placed? I think you might benefit from a sofa facing long wall with TV on console on long wall. A swivel chair on fireplace end so it could swing to fireplace or TV. Then possibly a compact recliner on the other side of sofa. I would have to think and examine this floor plan in more detail to determine if you have enough room for a sectional. Sectionals are much harder to work with and your space is complicated with corner fireplace with walkways in and around the space.

Is your floor vinyl? Might want to make sure it is laid properly. It looks like it is curling on edges? Might just be camera reflections?

So the floors are wood and yes we are planning on having a tv mounted on the wall above fire place.

The TV over the fireplace is going to be very limiting for furniture because you have an external door on one side and not much room on that end of the room. So i want to do a scale layout for you. Bbl.

this is a more awkward arrangement, but would work, just makes TV watching more difficult I believe. If this were my room, I would put the TV on the long wall and put a great piece of art over the fireplace and that would give the room a nice "focal point". It will be the first thing you see at any rate coming into the space. I put a sofa table behind the sofa with lamps, two swivel chairs so the one can swivel to the TV over the fireplace and I put a console under or in front of the window on the other wall. This provides sufficient walkway space through the room too. The main thing is no sectional will work well, imo, in this space. They are just too large. If that is where you want to go, then you only have the long wall for one side of the sectional, and the side that would back to the kitchen for a configuration to the TV.
