I painted the trim and windows in my dining room. Need honest opinions on before and after.

My husband doesn’t like it:(

I put a few things in my sketchbook. What should be on the buffet, a few small items or a larger one?
I probably won’t serve from the buffet. Should I put something floral on the buffet since I have the candle sconces or on the table?

First of all the white looks amazing, it makes the room seem open and clean.

The color it had before makes it seem old and it didnt allow the contrast with the light gray as the white does making that color pop.

Budget for all accessories for dining room?

I was so nervous when I painted the white. Great advice from pros on here gave me the courage to do it. I love it!!

No worries Julie, I know you’re a busy woman! Like to stay around $300 to $400. Something for the table, buffet and something for one of the corners, like a plant or something. Maybe on a side table so it can be seen. I have a few plants but on the floor. Blank slate photos.

    Excuse mess in living room;)

There were some pretty decorations on the buffets in your idea books.

Yea, I like the white vases down middle of the table.

If you do white vases down middle of table I would add a oversized orchid onto the buffet...Pier One has a really nice one......5 Stars.....I use it for clients all the time...really great for the price!

Would I put the orchid in the middle or to the side?

In the middle f the buffet it is large so that is all you would need.

How about one of these plant stands.

Check out interior homescapes.com, they have lots of pretty vases. I saw these too and thought the texture was interesting.

Hi! I'm not sure if you have found artwork yet I've been reading through all the comments but couldn't find anything. If you don't have artwork yet, could you take a more straight photo of the area so I could try photoshopping some different options into the space for you? Thanks! :) Nathalie Van.

Haha! U saw my plant in the back:) there’s another plant beside it. I’m only putting them in the DR, I don’t like it crowded. Thanks for the pics and ideas. I have a good idea on the direction I want to go. Now to the next project...the family room!!

Most people on here like the cheap painted cookie cutter look so don't be surprised by the overwhelming response.

I like the white trim. You brightened up the room!

I am reading this thread for the first time today and think your decision to paint the trim white was a great one. It is a vast improvement. I enjoyed your comment about your painting while your DH was away. My DH used to camp with my boys' BSA troop. He soon learned that as soon as he backed out of the driveway, a project would ensue. We used to joke that I promise not to move any exterior doors while he was away so he could find his way back in upon his return. Thanks for the memory!

@milinda77 I’m glad that put a smile on your face:) My husband doesn’t say much but my neighbor stops by to find out what the next project is once he leaves!

I saw that yesterday, the marble will show better on the dark wood. One last question about my sconces, are they far enough from the mirror or should they be moved out a bit?
  • PRO

Yes the marble vased one is great..would look very nice...

the sconces look good to me!

Finally, all the trim in the living room is painted! The BIG question, should I put the entire entertainment center back together (6 separate pieces) or leave as is? The tv can be mounted to the back panel or the panel can be taken off. Would like to know what everyone’s thoughts are:)

Thanks Julie! it looks a little bare, but I guess I’ll get used to it. would like to have something besides the plants and of course the kids electronics on the floor maybe something on the walls?also the drapes and the picture are temporary. I ordered the same drapes as the dining room just waiting on them
  • 7 years ago
I’m thinking I might want to stick with something more neutral, like black-and-white above the couch. I don’t mind color, you know I love green but I don’t want to have one of those houses were everything just is over come by a pop out color. I want it to be a little more subtle. I’m always interested in your thoughts on what I should do:)

Good you are getting the new drapes....let me see what art I can find...

Thanks. I’ve been looking but haven’t found anything. I’ve been decluttering the past month. I only want new stuff that makes me “happy” when I look at it. I’m taking a stance against clutter, guess that can be my New Year’s resolution:) Thank you again for all help!

I would remove anything in the room you do not want..pillows art accessories...so we have a clean slate.....than post image....what about lamps?

Hi Julie! So sorry it took me awhile for these pictures. Yesterday we were figuring the best way to get my son to Boston next wknd for hockey. I did not expect his senior year to be so expensive:( Anyhow, I removed everything that can go. Except for the family bible on the coffee table, lamps(I love my lamps) but I can use them somewhere else.

Oh, the mirrors will stay just until my husband fixes the hole in the wall. My wonderful child somehow put there with his elbow...I don’t even ask how anymore:))

Tracey..it is my pleasure..so great when we see a plan come together and our Houzz friends are happy with their spaces!

now that the TV unit is a reasonable size I would try it on the other wall...think about it....I also think large based light colored lamps would help make room a bit brighter...another thing to think about:)

Hi Julie! Any luck on the mood board for living room?
  • PRO

Hey Tracey..omg I made a board up along time ago?? thats strange..I know Houzz was having some issues and posts got lost..hmm..let me go back to my gallery and see if I saved it...if not no worries...I remember finding great lamps in a light colored ceramic base..a bit lower...and bringing in lighter items to the space..fid we talk about your coffee table? Can that be changed out if I find a great deal?

I just figured you were busy and I didn’t want to be a pain:) we did not talk about the table, but I’m not opposed to looking at something new. Also maybe a new tv stand.

What do I think of these lamps? Is the white drum shade too matchy matchy with the dining room? The silver and black lamp is in my bedroom. Maybe I can switch with the living room lamps??
