Should I install a bread box in a drawer?

I have an option to make a regular kitchen drawer into a breadbox which looks like its just a sheet of plastic laid over the wooden drawer. This would be an additional cost, which would be OK as long as a "bread drawer" truly makes a difference. I could also just put bags of bread in the drawer as is without the sliding plastic.

Just put bread in the drawer
Purchase the bread box "upgrade"

after using it for bread as is for a number of weeks and you decide it works well for you, then you can upgrade.

how much bread do you use? I know that even before celiac, I didn't use enough bread to give up that much space!

(we also keep bread in the fridge, bcs then it doesn't get moldy, and we don't really notice if it also gets tough; lots of food folks say you shouldn't store bread in the fridge bcs it affects the quality, and the freezer is better, but we've been doing it for years with no downside that bothers us, and we dont want to hassle with the freezer)

I would use this! I'm a fresh bread fanatic, and I hate having it all over my counter, where it currently resides. The plastic would definitely help keep it more air tight and less likely to dry out.

On my counter is usually a loaf of French, a loaf of sliced and some bakery cookies or treats for kids lunches. If I had room, I would love a bread drawer!

I don't think that plastic lid makes much of a difference, but "bread drawer" sounds fancy! Skip it.

My 16 year old active teen boy is the only one that still has bread around his sandwiches. Those of us who are a bit more mature and want to keep our figures, have them protein style aka lettuce wrap style.

We too had to consider bread storage in our previous home a few years back. Thoughts were on the counter bread box, bread box in drawer, bread bags on counter, and bread bags in drawer. We did bread bags in drawers and just remodeled our "new" home and did it again. When planning that area the questions- do you stack and how much/size of bread? That then determines inside drawer dimensions needed and then the size of lower drawer base cabinet to support that size drawer.

We are on our third house with the bread bags in the drawer.

No pantry? Mine lives there, unless it's fresh in which case it has to go in the fridge.

I don't think I would use a drawer because crumbs. Yes I know the bread would be in bags but in my head it would be crumb-y...

When I was a kid, my mother always had bread in a bread drawer, with a banana. When the banana turned brown, she made banana bread with it, and put another green banana in the drawer.

The bread was always fresh, and I don't ever remember getting mold.

Fast forward to today—the 1957 house we bought last year has a bread drawer. My wife (a certified Bread Freezer Person™) thought me daft to want to use the old bread drawer. However, after sneaking some rolls past her, and making her a sandwich with rolls she was certain were stale beyond palatability, she became a convert.

Never put fresh bread in the fridge if you want it to stay fresh. Dries out very fast.

I guess the choice is to have bread that's a bit dry, or bread that's moldy...personally speaking, fridge bread doesn't dry out for me

"Never put fresh bread in the fridge if you want it to stay fresh. Dries out very fast."

I would never suggest that other people do it, because I've heard this. However, we have been happy with our refrigerator bread for years. It may be drier, but it's quite enjoyable to us, even after a couple of weeks.

And it doesn't mold, and it's easier to deal with than frozen, when we just want one sandwich here and there.

I tried a bread drawer -- did not like it. That space is now used for holding foil, plastic wrap, parchment paper, etc.

Here’s an interesting article about the science of why bread dries and best storage methods.

It's also proven that bread WILL go moldy faster if it's not refrigerated. (Sources all over the place for your perusal...)I can't do a damn thing with moldy bread except throw it out...

    So...your choice, I guess. Personally, I won't waste if I don't have to.

I had a bread drawer and I loved it! It kept it out of sight, kept the crumbs contained and not spread all over the counter, let me trash my bread box and free up counterspace! If you don't like the cost, look at what Google shopping has to offer. Leave it off the order and do it aftermarket, it's not hard to install at all! I recommend Rev-A-Shelf products.

We had one growing up. It was a full box insert in the drawer, not just a plastic covering. It was the bed thing ever! I'm currently thinking about converting a drawer and finding a bread box insert to fit it. It's the #1 thing I miss about my mom's kitchen.

    Correction: the BEST thing ever!

We have one. We keep bags of chips in there. Our bread lives in the fridge

I have a stainless steel bread drawer in my 1984 kitchen. The stainless is the box & the lid. I would really miss it.
