If you're keeping the same garage door, then make it as inconspicuous as possible. If you replace it, do like Groveraxle said and make it attractive.

I see your dilemma. Everyone says to paint it the house color, but you don't live in a painted house, you live in a brick house. Have you looked into those faux carriage house window and hardware kits? They get great reviews.

I personally would do white - it’s never really going to ‘disappear’ but in this case at least it will go with the trim. I agree trying to make it the same colour of the brick isn’t really an attractive colour so I’d rather a colour I like - like white.

What do your neighbors have? This looks like a subdivision with similar homes so I’d drive around and see what others have done too!

Also LOVE the blue door. Great idea and that will draw the eyes somewhere else anyway. Plus and some nice porch decore and flowers and the garage doesn’t stand out as much in my opinion.

And if you have a budget for it I would update the two light fixture on either side - something larger and in a dark black or brown. I like lantern style. I find the ones from the builder or that were used a number of years ago way too small. We have a large ugly white garage door and that Change helped make it more attractive.

Nice ones a Lowe’s or home deport for a good price.

I think the white looks completely normal. Having a prominent garage on a house is completely normal. I wouldn't worry about it. Although I am in the camp that hopes someday to replace my generic builder grade doors with fancy ones, so I completely understand that. That's why I know about the Simulated Garage Door Windows and Magnetic Decorative Garage Door Accents I mentioned earlier. Sorry if I sound like I secretly work for the company. I've had them on my Amazon wishlist for a long time. lol. Just look at the reviews! And so many people provide pictures - you can spend a long time going through the reviews. Have fun!

The black garage door is definitely less “in your face” than the white one is. Looks “elegant” even.

Not sure where you live or what sun exposure your garage receives, but I would keep in mind that darker colors act like a heat sink absorbing any and all sun directed its way. If you go with a dark color it will not only be extremely hot, but it will fade out over time as the sun constantly beats on it. I know there are paints out there that claim they won't fade in the sun but I've yet to find one that can live up to that claim. There is only so much sun exposure a garage door (or shutters or front doors can take before they fade out and look tired).

If I decided to go with a dark garage.....should I paint the trim around the garage dark or leave it white??

And it's not just a problem with fading. The heat buildup can warp doors and ruin wood doors, and storm doors just make it worse. The heat accelerates aging. So, south- or west-facing doors should never have dark paint.

I would keep the garage trim white.

I'd just leave garage door as is and try to match garage trim to either brick colour or garage door colour. Love the blue door! Are you in Ontario?

A DIY blogger I follow was considering painting her garage doors black. The general consensus was definitely against it. Many commented that their first impression was a "gaping maw", "black hole", etc.

I have an ugly house and can't do much with my exterior. I get wishing you could make it different. But your house isn't ugly, it's perfectly normal. Wow people with your landscaping! That you do have an amazing amount of control over.

Because you're not willing to also buy the faux windows? That's actually what I'm doing. Here's some pics from the reviews that helped me make up my mind:

Plus keep in mind the ones I'm showing here and linked to above are magnetic. They are less than fifteen bucks for a set, and they don't damage the door to install, so if you plop them on your doors (you can do a magnet test before ordering, obviously) and don't like the way it looks, you just pull them back off, put them back in the box and return them. You're only out a few bucks shipping. Maybe they sell them locally and then you're not out shipping costs either. My Lowe's had them once, but for twice the price. Maybe they've gone down since.

I think painting the door to match the house is a better way to diminish the look of the door...a drop of trim will just look odd...

Amazon Canada doesn't have the faux windows. I found them at Lowe's online but they would be close to $500....I'm not willing to spend that ( I could save that to put towards future nicer door ha ha).

I found the "hardware" kit at Home Depot. It's about $40 here.

Oh whoops! Didn't realize you were in Canada. Too bad you can't get the $14 kit. So frustrating when things are so much cheaper elsewhere! My Home Depot actually carries the faux windows in store too but here they are a hundred bucks.

I just found the magnetic kit on amazon! It’s under $30 so think I might give it a try! Thanks for all your help!!
